Composition and Similarity of Bovine Rumen Microbiota across Individual Animals

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The bovine rumen houses a complex microbiota which is responsible for cattle's remarkable ability to convert indigestible plant mass into food products. Despite this ecosystem's enormous significance for humans, the composition and similarity of bacterial communities across different animals and the possible presence of some bacterial taxa in all ...

Rumen microbiota and its relation to fermentation in lactose-fed calves

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2021
In our previous studies, we revealed the effect of lactose inclusion in calf starters on the growth performance and gut development of calves. We conducted the present study as a follow-up study to identify the shift in rumen microbiota and its relation to rumen fermentation when calves are fed a lactose-containing starter.

Rumen microbiota regulates IMF deposition in Xizang sheep by activating the PPARγ transcription factor: a rumen-muscle axis perspective

open access: yesmSystems
The interaction between microbiota and muscle by the rumen-muscle axis and its impact on sheep meat flavor has received little attention. This study selected Xizang sheep under summer and autumn grazing conditions as models for different rumen bacteria ...

Association between diet and rumen microbiota in wild roe deer

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 2019
ABSTRACT The association between diet and the rumen microbiota for wild animals remains largely unexplored. Here, we explored this association using a combination of 16S rRNA gene sequencing to determine the prokaryote microbiota and 18S rRNA gene sequencing to determine the dietary components for wild roe deer. These analyses revealed a

Antibiotic pretreatment minimizes dietary effects on reconstructure of rumen fluid and mucosal microbiota in goats

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, 2018
We used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to examine the posteffects of antibiotic treatment on the structure and metabolism of rumen microbiota. Twelve goats were randomly assigned into two groups, with one group receiving intramuscular streptomycin injection at

The Regulation of Ruminal Short-Chain Fatty Acids on the Functions of Rumen Barriers

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2019
The rumen barriers, constituted by the microbial, physical and immune barrier, prevent the transmission of pathogens and toxins to the host tissue in the maintenance of host-microbe homeostasis.

Age Influences the Bacterial Composition of Samples From Buffaloes in the Marajó Archipelago, Pará, Brazilian Amazon

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 3, June 2026.
Milk microbiomes showed similar composition in young and adult buffaloes. Despite distinct microbial profiles among matrices, shared bacterial families indicate microbial interaction between milk, faeces, calf spittle and soil. ABSTRACT Buffalo milk stands out for its nutritional qualities and is mainly produced in Brazil in the Amazon region ...

A Novel Function of Nonadecanoic Acid in Regulating Glucose Homeostasis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 26, 8 May 2026.
This study identifies the odd‐chain fatty acid C19:0 as an endogenous ligand of GPR120 that promotes glucose homeostasis via Gαq signaling. In obesity, elevated palmitic acid suppresses endogenous C19:0 production through a miRNA–PPARα–HACL1 pathway, offering a promising direction for understanding the role of OCFAs in human health.

From Assessment to Optimization: A Comprehensive Review of the Mutton Quality Evaluation Index, Factors, and Improvement Strategies

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 3, May 2026.
This graphical abstract summarizes the comprehensive framework of mutton quality, including evaluation indices, influencing factors, and improvement strategies. Meat quality is systematically assessed through multiple dimensions, including flavor, color, pH, tenderness, water‐holding capacity, intramuscular fat, and nutritional composition.

Relationship between rumen microbiota and pregnancy toxemia in ewes

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science
IntroductionPregnancy toxemia (PT) is a nutritional metabolic disease of ewes in late pregnancy. This study aimed to reveal the relationship between rumen microbiota and PT.MethodsWe selected 10 healthy ewes (CON) and 10 pregnancy toxemia ewes (PT) at 135 days of gestation according to the blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), glucose (Glu) concentrations ...
