Salinomycin activity in ruminants

1983
The polyether antibiotic salinomycin (SLM), supplemented in low concentrations to the feed, showed nutritive activity in ruminants. The increase of weight gain and of feed utilization of steers was due to an increase in the percentage of propionic acid, and a decrease in the percentage of acetic acid and butyric acid in the rumen8.

Doxycycline, salinomycin, monensin and ivermectin repositioned as cancer drugs.

Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, 2019
Chemotherapy is one of the standard methods for the treatment of malignant tumors. It aims to cause lethal damage to cellular structures, mainly DNA.

Anticancer Activity of Polyether Ionophore-Salinomycin

Anti-Cancer Agents in Medicinal Chemistry, 2015
Since the discovery of unusual anti-tumor activity of natural polyether antibiotic - Salinomycin, this compound, along with its derivatives, has been intensively studied against different human cancer cells, both in vivo and in vitro. Salinomycin has shown strong inhibition activity against the proliferation process of many different cancer cells ...

Salinomycin: A new monovalent cation ionophore

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1975
The cation discriminations of salinomycin and its derivatives have been studied by measuring complexability with cations and transport rate of them across organic phase. Salinomycin exhibited a great preference for K+ over other monovalent and divalent cations in migrating cations into organic phase in two phase systems.

Salinomycin poisoning in point‐of‐lay turkeys

Australian Veterinary Journal, 1989
Salinomycin poisoning occurred in a flock of 700 point‐of‐lay turkeys; 400 birds died over 7 days as a result of consuming feed contaminated with 50 ppm salinomycin. No gross lesions were detected. Histologic evidence of a myopathy was most readily detected in leg muscles of turkeys 5 to 7 d after ingesting salinomycin.

Salinomycin toxicity in dairy calves

Veterinary Record, 2011
SINCE the beginning of October, Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA) regional laboratories and SAC disease surveillance centres have been investigating unusual incidents of clinical respiratory disease presentations in calves on four farms.

Salinomycin – A New Cancer Drug Candidate

Chemical Biology & Drug Design, 2012
Very recently, it has been shown that it is possible to selectively kill breast cancer stem cells using the ionophore antibiotic, salinomycin. Its ability to kill cancer stem cells and apoptosis‐resistant cancer cells may define salinomycin as a novel anticancer drug.

The Site of Action of the Anticoccidial Salinomycin (Coxistac)

The Journal of Parasitology, 1979
The anticoccidial salinomycin has a cidal effect against chicken coccidia. Restricted and unrestricted medication studies and histopathological examinations of chicks infected with Eimeria acervulina, E. maxima, or E. tenella showed that parasites were destroyed within host cells during asexual development.
