Biodegradable Active Packaging With Improved Functionality Through PVA, Itaconic Acid, Chitosan, Nanoparticles, and Lemon Peel for Sustainable Solutions

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 10, October 2025.
This study explores biodegradable PVA‐based films enhanced with itaconic acid, chitosan, lemon peel extract, and silver nanoparticles for active food packaging. When applied to blueberries, these bioactive coatings reduced weight loss, maintained visual quality, and limited microbial growth, outperforming uncoated samples.

Extraction, Characterization, and Antimicrobial Ability of Chitosan and Edible Oil From Ugandan Winged Termites

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 10, October 2025.
This study extracted edible oil and chitosan using both chemical and green extraction techniques, from four species of edible winged termites. Yield and efficiency of the extraction techniques were compared, the extracted products characterized for physico‐chemical properties, and the antimicrobial ability of chitosan assessed against a gram‐positive ...

Eco‐Friendly Innovation: Biodegradable and Oil‐Resistant Bags From Lotus halophilus Extract, Polyvinyl Alcohol, and Guar Gum for Sustainable Food Packaging

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 10, October 2025.
Biodegradable PVA–guar gum films with Lotus halophilus extract show enhanced antioxidant, antibacterial, and barrier properties for food packaging. ABSTRACT Clear or improperly designed packaging can allow nonconvenient conditions to degrade the oil, leading to rancidity and loss of flavor.

An Evaluation of Genotoxicity and 90‐Day Repeated‐Dose Oral Toxicity in Rats of DracoBelle Nu sd

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 10, October 2025.
A powdered water extract of D. moldavica, DracoBelle Nu sd, did not induce gene mutations in a bacterial reverse mutation assay, did not induce genotoxicity in an mammalian micronucleus test (MMT), and did not cause adverse effects in male or female Han:WIST rats after 90/91 consecutive days of oral gavage administration of 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg bw ...
