Ambient luminance and vertical migration of the sardine Sardina pilchardus [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Ecology - Progress Series, 1999
The vertical migration of the sardine Sardina pilchardus W. was investigated in terms of a dynamic movement in the wild. The hourly position of the centre of sardine density (the weighted mean depth of sardines in the water column) was estimated by means of a dual beam echosounder during the daytime.

Evaluation of spawning frequency in a Mediterranean sardine population (Sardina pilchardus sardina)

Marine Biology, 2003
The postovulatory follicle method was used to assess the frequency of spawning of sardine (Sardina pilchardus sardina) in the Central Aegean Sea (eastern Mediterranean) in November–December 1999 and 2000. A field-based aging key for postovulatory follicles (POFs) was developed, and preliminary evidence is presented of a temperature influence on the ...

The unexpected occurrence of late Sardina pilchardus The unexpected occurrence of late Sardina pilchardus in a temperate estuary

2009
The presence of sardine larval stages inside estuaries has generally been regarded as accidental and restricted to the lower part of estuaries. Sampling done with a zooplankton net in the Guadiana estuary corroborated this hypothesis. Late sardine larvae (32.8 ± 2.0 mm) were, however, unexpectedly collected with an otter trawl, 14 km upstream from ...

A study on the lipid fraction of Adriatic sardine filets (Sardina pilchardus)

Food / Nahrung, 2004
AbstractSardine (Sardina pilchardus Walb.) is an important Mediterranean commercial fish species. In this study, the lipids of sardine filets, fished in the Adriatic Sea at different times, were examined. In function of their total lipid (TL) content, sardine filet samples were grouped into lean (TL < 4%) and fat (TL > 4%).

Uncovering hermaphroditism in European sardine (Sardina pilchardus)

An intersex specimen of European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) was found in a female-dominated sampling caught off the southern Catalan coast during the winter spawning season. The gonads showed ovarian tissue with developing oocytes in several stages, as well as testicular lobules, filled with spermatogenic cells, that cannot be classified as fully ...
