Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

Cascades Tolerance of Scale-Free Networks with Attack Cost

open access: yesInternational Journal of Computational Intelligence Systems, 2017
Network robustness against cascades is a major topic in the fields of complex networks. In this paper, we propose an attack-cost-based cascading failure model, where the attack cost of nodes is positively related to its degree.

NKCC1: A key regulator of glioblastoma progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Glioblastoma (GBM) progression is driven by disrupted chloride cotransporter homeostasis. NKCC1 is highly expressed in stem‐like, astrocytic, and progenitor cells, correlating with earlier recurrence, while overall survival remains unaffected. NKCC1 serves as a prognostic marker and potential therapeutic target, linking chloride transporter imbalance ...

Random matrix analysis of complex networks

open access: yes, 2007
We study complex networks under random matrix theory (RMT) framework. Using nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor spacing distributions we analyze the eigenvalues of adjacency matrix of various model networks, namely, random, scale-free and small ...

Adaptor protein CIN85 potentiates the motility of osteosarcoma cells via the Akt/mTOR and MMP2‐COL3A1 axis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CIN85 is highly expressed in osteosarcoma, particularly in metastatic lesions. Its overexpression increases cell migration and Matrigel invasion, while silencing CIN85 suppresses these behaviors. Transcriptome analysis shows that CIN85 regulates MMP2, COL3A1, and Akt/mTOR signaling. Targeting these pathways reverses CIN85‐induced motility, highlighting

Impact of noise and damage on collective dynamics of scale-free neuronal networks

open access: yes, 2012
We study the role of scale-free structure and noise in collective dynamics of neuronal networks. For this purpose, we simulate and study analytically a cortical circuit model with stochastic neurons.

Molecular cancer prevention: Intercepting disease

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Oncological practice must evolve, from treating established tumours to proactive cancer interception before clinical manifestation. This will require mechanistic insight into tumour initiation, validated biomarkers of early disease development and redesigned clinical trials, enabling cancer interception to become a core pillar of oncology with the ...

On the influence of topological characteristics on robustness of complex networks

open access: yes, 2013
In this paper, we explore the relationship between the topological characteristics of a complex network and its robustness to sustained targeted attacks.

Circulating tumor cell viability during and after radiotherapy mirrors treatment response in cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Radiotherapy (RT) response depends on the DNA repair capacity of tumor and host cells. We show that circulating tumor cell (CTC) counts and apoptosis rates before and after RT predict treatment response and outcome, which can be accessed via easily accessible liquid biopsy approaches. Created in BioRender. Wikman, H.
