鯖屬之花腹鯖(Scomber australasicus)與白腹鯖 (S. japonicus)常出現在台灣附近海域。 兩者皆為大洋性魚類,並且成群洄游,進行季節性的遷徙,以達到攝餌或產卵之目的。 這兩種鯖魚為台灣近海漁業中重要的漁業資源,成為鯖鰺圍網及定置網漁業中之主要漁獲物,尤其以花腹鯖數量較多。 對此二物種之漁業施以管理,並對此資源加以保育,以維持資源利用之永續性為目前重要課題,因此物種的判別以及系群的結構皆為值得探究的問題。 在台灣,白腹鯖過去的研究甚少,而花腹鯖在系群研究上數量較多,但結論不一。
