Halogen-based reconstruction of Russian Arctic sea ice area from the Akademii Nauk ice core (Severnaya Zemlya) [PDF]
The role of sea ice in the Earth climate system is still under debate, although it is known to influence albedo, ocean circulation, and atmosphere–ocean heat and gas exchange.

Animals must match their growth rate to available nutrients. We show that in Drosophila larvae, the nutrient‐sensing TOR kinase controls growth by regulating levels of TFAM, a key regulator of mitochondrial function, in the adipose tissue. When nutrients are abundant, high TOR activity suppresses TFAM, lowering mitochondrial bioenergetic activity and ...

Experiments on sea ice fracture toughness in the Bohai Sea
The fracture toughness of sea ice is an important parameter to analyze ice load on offshore structures, and also affects the sea ice dynamics, such as sea ice breakage, rafting and ridging, etc. In this study, sea ice samples were collected in the Liaodong Bay

Pancake sea ice kinematics and dynamics using shipboard stereo video
In the marginal ice zone, surface waves drive motion of sea ice floes. The motion of floes relative to each other can cause periodic collisions, and drives the formation of pancake sea ice.

Peripheral lysosomes recruit PLEKHG3 to focal adhesions and restrain protrusion dynamics
Proximity‐dependent labeling at the LAMTOR complex revealed the Rho GEF PLEKHG3 as a lysosome‐proximal protein directing the study toward the influence of lysosome positioning on actin dynamics and cell motility. We show that PLEKHG3 colocalizes with lysosomes at focal adhesion sites and observe that forced peripheral dispersion of lysosomes hinders ...

A study on the role of sea ice in the nitrous oxide cycle in the Prydz Bay, Antarctica
N2O is one of the most important greenhouse gases and ozone depletor, which was a matter of more and more concerned. The Southern Ocean was considered as one of the most important N2O source and was believed to account for ~1/4 of oceanic budget. However,

Golgi enzymes are retrieved from the plasma membrane to the trans‐Golgi network
Golgi enzymes are traditionally considered resident proteins retained within the Golgi apparatus. Here, we demonstrate that a subset transiently reaches the cell surface and is subsequently retrieved to the trans‐Golgi network via retrograde transport. Using a nanobody‐based toolkit, we uncover a dynamic trafficking cycle of several Golgi enzymes.

Ice dynamics in the central Greenland Sea [PDF]
Until recently a tongue‐shaped sea ice feature formed over the central Greenland Sea each winter. This tongue, known to generations of Norwegian sealers as “Odden,” sometimes protrudes several hundred kilometres in a northeast direction from the main East Greenland ice edge. Owing to the high wave energy in the Greenland Sea in winter, the formation of

Numerical study of sea ice dynamics and wave-ice interactions in the marginal ice zone
The Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) is a highly dynamic region between the open ocean and the inner ice pack. The ice over this region is subjected to waves, introducing new forces but also changing the ice from a cohesive material to a mobile collection of ...

Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...
