Seasonal forecast of sea ice extent in the Barents sea

open access: yesArctic and Antarctic Research, 2019
Earlier, the authors established a close relationship between the temperature of water coming from the North Atlantic and the sea ice extent (SIE) in the Barents Sea, which accounts for up to 75 % of the inter-annual variability of the monthly SIE from January to June.

Sea salt as an ice core proxy for past sea ice extent: A process‐based model study [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2014
AbstractSea ice is a reflection of, and a feedback on, the Earth's climate. We explore here, using a global atmospheric chemistry‐transport model, the use of sea salt in Antarctic ice cores to obtain continuous long‐term, regionally integrated records of past sea ice extent, synchronous with ice core records of climate.

Record Early Sea Ice Loss in Southeastern Hudson Bay in Spring 2024

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Hudson Bay seasonal sea‐ice cover plays an important role in marine ecosystems and human activities. Spring 2024 witnessed a uniquely early southeastern opening, leading to basin‐wide sea ice extent falling 5σ below the 1979–2023 average.

Modeled Arctic sea ice evolution through 2300 in CMIP5 extended RCPs [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2014
Almost all global climate models and Earth system models that participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) show strong declines in Arctic sea ice extent and volume under the highest forcing scenario of the representative ...

Record Low Northern Hemisphere Sea Ice Extent in March 2015 [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 2016
The record low Northern Hemisphere (NH) winter sea ice maximum stemmed from a strong interannual surface anomaly in the Pacific sector, but it would not have been reached without long-term climate change.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Positive trend in the Antarctic sea ice cover and associated changes in surface temperature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The Antarctic sea ice extent has been slowly increasing contrary to expected trends due to global warming and results from coupled climate models. After a record high extent in 2012 the extent was even higher in 2014 when the magnitude exceeded 20 × 106 ...

Influence of Sea Surface Temperature in the Tropics on the Antarctic Sea Ice during Global Warming

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2022
Sea ice extent in the Antarctica, unlike in the Arctic, did not show a decrease until 2016 under observed global warming. The aim of the study is to explain this climatic phenomenon based on the idea of joint dynamics of the Southern Ocean oceanic ...

Brief communication: Increasing shortwave absorption over the Arctic Ocean is not balanced by trends in the Antarctic [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
On the basis of a new, consistent, long-term observational satellite dataset we show that, despite the observed increase of sea ice extent in the Antarctic, absorption of solar shortwave radiation in the Southern Ocean poleward of 60° latitude is not ...
