Evaluation of the Dual Impact of Nanotechnologies on Health and Environment Through Alternative Bridging Models

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review explores how alternative invertebrate and small‐vertebrate models advance the evaluation of nanomaterials across medicine and environmental science. By bridging cellular and organismal levels, these models enable integrated assessment of toxicity, biodistribution, and therapeutic performance.

Overview of Seafood Research at Ashtown Food Research Centre (1990 - 2007) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
End of project reportIn recent years, the Irish seafood industry has faced stringent quotas and dwindling fish stocks. The introduction of fish farming added a new dimension but falling prices also created difficulties for this sector.

From the Gut to the Brain: Microplastic‐Associated Neurovascular Dysfunction and Implications for Stroke Risk

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Chronic oral exposure to microplastics may disrupt gut microbiota homeostasis and intestinal barrier integrity, potentially engaging the gut–brain axis and systemic inflammatory responses. These alterations may be associated with impaired blood–brain barrier function, cerebral microvascular dysfunction, and enhanced endothelial inflammation, pro ...

Hyperspectral imaging and deep learning for parasite detection in white fish under industrial conditions

open access: yesScientific Reports
Parasites in fish muscle present a significant problem for the seafood industry in terms of both quality and health and safety, but the low contrast between parasites and fish tissue makes them exceedingly difficult to detect.

Bio‐Inspired Cascade Photocatalysis on Fe Single‐Atom Carbon Nitride Upcycles Plastic Wastes for Effective Acetic Acid Production

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates a novel cascade photocatalysis concept using Fe single‐atom catalysts (Fe@C3N4 SAC) to directly upcycle plastics (PET, PP, PE, PVC) into valuable acetic acid at ambient conditions. Inspired by microbial degradation, the bifunctional cascade photocatalyst combines Fenton‐like oxidation and CO2 photoreduction, as validated by ...

Hyperspectral Imaging of Blood Through Fish Skin Using a Neural Network Machine Learning Approach

open access: yesJournal of Spectroscopy
We propose a novel model for determining residual blood concentration in both cod fillets and whole fish using interactance hyperspectral imaging. The amount and distribution of residual blood in fish muscle is an important quality parameter.

Effect Differences of Omega‐3 Fatty Acids From Plant Oil and Fish Oil on Human Health

open access: yesAgriFood: Journal of Agricultural Products for Food, EarlyView.
Omega‐3 fatty acids in plant oil is no less than fish oil on human health. ALA in plant oil takes directly healthy effects without conversion to DHA and EPA. Plant oil can be substitutes for fish oil to support partial ω‐3 fatty acids. For people who cannot afford fish oil, plant oil is also good for public health.
