SEBUM EXCRETION AND SEBUM COMPOSITION IN ADOLESCENT MEN WITH AND WITHOUT ACNE VULGARIS

British Journal of Dermatology, 1970
SUMMARY. The sebum excretion rate, sebaceous count and the chemical composition of the sebum have been determined in 10 young men without or with minimal acne vulgaris and 20 young men with gross acne vulgaris. No significant relation between the sebum excretion rate and the presence of acne was found.

Effect of Tetracycline on the Composition of Sebum in Acne Vulgaris

New England Journal of Medicine, 1965
ACNE vulgaris is a common inflammatory disorder of the skin involving pilosebaceous structures; its pathogenesis is imperfectly understood. Earliest lesions demonstrate a partial rupture of the follicle wall, with surrounding dermal inflammation.1 The latter apparently results from the intrusion of material from the follicle into the dermis. Sebum, the

Analysis of sensitive skin barrier function: basic indicators and sebum composition

International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2018
AbstractObjectivesSensitive skin (SS) is a condition characterised by high reactivity, low tolerance, and susceptibility to allergies of the skin. Owing to changes in the environment and marketing strategies, as well as the increasing public awareness about skin care, attention to skin condition is gradually increasing.

Changes in the Fatty Acid Composition of Sebum associated with High Carbohydrate Diets

Nature, 1964
EXCESS of carbohydrate in the diet has been considered to be of significance in the aetiology of certain types of skin disorder1. With this in mind the opportunity was taken to examine the fatty acid composition of the sebum in subjects who were on experimental diets containing a relative excess of carbohydrate.

Nutritional influences of pellagra on sebum composition

British Journal of Dermatology, 1977
Sebum composition has been measured in 51 patients with varying degrees of pellagra and compared with a control group of subjects in the same geographic area. In the pellagra group the wax ester percentage was 14-9 versus the normal of 21-9%. The squalene percentage was increased in the pellagra group (11-6%) versus a control value of 8-4%.

The lipid composition of bovine sebum and dermis

British Veterinary Journal, 1985
Abstract A comparison has been made of the lipid composition of bovine sebum with that of the surrounding dermal layers, after removal of the hairs and sebaceous glands by microdissection, to determine if the linoleic acid-rich triglyceride fraction of the sebum is synthesized by the gland.

The effect of environment on sebum output and composition in cattle

Research in Veterinary Science, 1975
In an investigation into the effect of short-term exposure to different temperatures and humidities on the sebaceous glands of Ayrshire calves it was concluded that temperature had no appreciable effect on sebum output or its fatty acid composition. At a low humidity, however, the cutaneous outputs of palmitic and myristic acids were higher.

Is remission of acne due to changes in sebum composition?

Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, 1987
Summary Remission of acne is unlikely to be due to a reduction in sebum production as this remains increased despite the improvement. To investigate the possibility that remission may be due to changes in the composition of sebum, we have measured these changes in males of similar ages with severe acne, severe acne that was improving, and previous ...

Sebum excretion rate, surface lipid composition and constitutional eczema

Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, 1977
Summary The sebum excretion rate of subjects with constitutional eczema was no different from that of a matched group of controls. This would suggest that one reason for the reduced incidence of acne amongst atopic subjects is partly determined by the low sebum excretion rate.

Lack of influence of testosterone on sebum output and composition in bovines

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1985
Experiments were conducted to determine if testosterone influences sebum output (SO) and composition (SC) in different genotypes of cattle. There were significant breed differences in plasma testosterone levels and SO but no relationship was established between the two variables. Castration of neonatal and adult bulls did not affect their subsequent SO
