How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

Treatment of metastatic breast cancer: second line and beyond
Increasing use of standard chemotherapy, especially anthracycline- and taxane-based therapies, in early-stage breast cancer has led to a corresponding increase in heavily pretreated and/or treatment-resistant cases of metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Thus, second and later lines of MBC therapy frequently involve the clinically challenging picture of ...

Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.

A context‐dependent modulatory role for eIF6 in acquired resistance to vemurafenib in melanoma
Acquired resistance to vemurafenib upregulates the translation factor eIF6 in melanoma cells. Silencing eIF6 in resistant cells reduces proliferation and partially restores drug sensitivity, whereas its overexpression increases sensitivity across melanoma lines regardless of BRAF status, via modulation of mTOR, S6K, and MAPK signaling.

Second-line treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma: from theory to practical issues
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most frequent primary liver cancer with unmet needs of effective medications. Lenvatinib – a new oral multikinase inhibitor (MKI) proved to be as effective as sorafenib in terms of survival has been added recently to

Second-line HIV treatment failure in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis [PDF]
BackgroundIncreased second-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) failure rate narrows future options for HIV/AIDS treatment. It has critical implications in resource-limited settings; including sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where the burden of HIV-infection is ...
