Interactions of age-dependent mortality and selectivity functions in age-based stock assessment models [PDF]
The natural mortality rate (M) of fish varies with size and age, although it is often assumed to be constant in stock assessments. Misspecification of M may bias important assessment quantities.

Monte Carlo study of gating and selection in potassium channels
The study of selection and gating in potassium channels is a very important issue in modern biology. Indeed such structures are known in all types of cells in all organisms where they play many important functional roles.

This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

ХРАНИТЕЛЕН СПЕКТЪР И СЕЛЕКТИВНОСТ НА ХРАНЕНЕ НА ЛИЧИНКИТЕ НА БЯЛАТА РИБА (SANDER LUCIOPERCA L.)
Diet and growth of pikeperch fry (Sander lucioperca) reared in fish pond was investigated for period of 32 days. In body size about 11.0 mm main food items are zooplankton representatives of the genus Bosmina and partly by Copepoda.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Zinc binding groups for histone deacetylase inhibitors
Zinc binding groups (ZBGs) play a crucial role in targeting histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) to the active site of histone deacetylases (HDACs), thus determining the potency of HDACIs.

Two generic mechanisms for emergence of direction selectivity coexist in recurrent neural networks [PDF]
Poster presentation: Twenty Second Annual Computational Neuroscience Meeting: CNS*2013. Paris, France. 13-18 July 2013. In the mammalian visual cortex, the time-averaged response of many neurons is maximal for stimuli moving in a particular direction ...

We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
