Selenomethionine in Enzymatic Transmethylations
Nature, 1957IN the past, biological interest in selenium has been centred around its toxic role as the cause of ‘alkali disease’ and ‘blind staggers’1 and as a source of industrial poisoning2. However, recent developments suggest a more important role for this element.

The utilization of selenomethionine by Escherichia coli
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 1971Abstract The replacement of methionine by selenomethionine has been investigated in Escherichia coli . The analog is relatively non-toxic to growth of E. coli 26 at concentrations as high as 0.01 M, provided cysteine is added to the growth medium.

Synthesis and analysis of selenomethionine metabolites
Analytical Biochemistry, 1989This paper describes the enzymatic synthesis of selenomethionine metabolites of the transmethylation and polyamine synthesis pathways: adenosylselenomethionine, adenosylselenohomocysteine, decarboxylated adenosylselenomethionine, and methylselenoadenosine.

Thyroparathyroid Uptake of Selenomethionine in the Rat
Endocrinology, 196775Se-selenomethionine has been used clinically for parathyroid and pancreas scintiscanning. This study analyzes the time sequence of selenomethionine uptake by the parathyroid and thyroid glands and the effects of thyroxine pretreatment and a low calcium diet on this uptake. The parathyroid uptake curve shows a peak in activity at 20 min when the blood

The Raman spectra of selenomethionine and selenocystine
Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, 1981The trace element selenium is known to be a part of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (glutathione-hydrogen peroxide oxidoreductase, E.C.1.11.1.9). Studies have shown that selenium in the enzyme exists in at least two forms or oxidation states. It is probable that selenium has been incorporated into the enzyme as the selenocysteine amino acid.

Reaction of selenomethionine with o-benzoquinone
Analytical Biochemistry, 1981Abstract A new reaction of selenomethionine with o-benzoquinone is described. This reaction can be used to distinguish between methionine and selenomethionine.

Electrochemical oxidation of selenocystine and selenomethionine
Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces, 2009Electrochemical oxidation of selenocystine (SeCys) and selenomethionine (SeMet), on a gold electrode was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), rotating disk electrode technique (RDE) and chronocoulometry (CC). In 0.2 mol/L HAc-NaAc (pH=3.90) supporting electrolyte, anodic peak I potential of SeCys and SeMet was 810 mV and 638 mV, respectively, and this ...

METABOLISM OF SELENOMETHIONINE IN THE RUMEN
Canadian Journal of Animal Science, 1974Five rumen-fistulated wethers were dosed intraruminally with a single dose of 75Se-selenomethionine, and the rumen liquor was collected after various time intervals and separated into bacterial, cell-free, and protozoa plus plant material fractions. Maximum 75Se activity in rumen fluid was observed 2 h after labelled selenomethionine was administered.
