Role of Self-Interaction Effects in the Geometry Optimization of Small Metal Clusters

open access: yes, 1995
By combining the Self-Interaction Correction (SIC) with pseudopotential perturbation theory, the role of self-interaction errors inherent to the Local Density Approximation (LDA) to Density Functional Theory is estimated in the determination of ground ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Holistic Leadership: A Model for Leader-Member Engagement and Development [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Dr. Candis Best explores the theory of holistic leadership and further provides the model and framework for it to be empirically tested. At present, Best opines that holistic leadership produces leadership which supports the development of self ...

Motivational Predictors of Physical Education Students’ Effort, Exercise Intentions, and Leisure-Time Physical Activity: A Multilevel Linear Growth Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Grounded in self-determination theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 2000), the current study explored whether physical education (PE) students’ psychological needs and their motivational regulations toward PE predicted mean differences and changes in effort in PE ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Learning to Learn and Teaching to Learn

open access: yesMedEdPublish, 2016
Medical training is notoriously difficult, and the motivation to learn and teach can decline with time. Building from the principles of self-determination theory, we provide reflections of a trainee, a trainee and supervisor, and a faculty supervisor on ...

Coaches and Teammates as Social Agents for Collegiate Athletes’ Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction

open access: yesJournal of Intercollegiate Sport, 2017
Teammates and coaches might be considered two of the most significant sources of social interactions for athletes. Deci and Ryan’s (2000) self-determination theory offers a motivational framework that can be used to understand the quality of ...

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.
