Effective engineering of a ketoreductase for the biocatalytic synthesis of an ipatasertib precursor

open access: yesCommunications Chemistry
Semi-rational enzyme engineering is a powerful method to develop industrial biocatalysts. Profiting from advances in molecular biology and bioinformatics, semi-rational approaches can effectively accelerate enzyme engineering campaigns.

Disulfide linkages in Plasmodium falciparum plasmepsin-i are essential elements for its processing activity and multi-milligram recombinant production yield.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Plasmodium falciparum plasmepsin-I (PM-I) has been considered a potential drug target for the parasite that causes fatal malaria in human. Determination of PM-I structures for rational design of its inhibitors is hindered by the difficulty in obtaining ...

Shaping Carbon Nitrides for Advanced Macrostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review examines how carbon nitride can be shaped through a range of printing and interfacial assembly methods. By bringing together additive manufacturing and liquid–liquid structuring concepts, carbon nitride is moving beyond its traditional powder‐based photocatalyst form toward digitally designed robust macroscale architectures with high design

Voter Turnout in Direct Democracy: Theory and Evidence [PDF]

open access: yes
We analyse voter turnout as a function of referendum types. An advisory referendum produces advice that a legislature may or may not take into account when choosing between two alternatives, whereas a binding referendum generates a decisive decision.

Substituent Effects on Cyanine Dyes Vary with Position and Chain Length

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
In cyanines, substituent effects vary as a function of substituent position and cyanine length. Electron‐donating‐ and ‐withdrawing groups at meso‐ and α‐positions of 4n+1/4n−1 long cyanines (n = 1, 2, 3…) cause opposing, hypsochromic and bathochromic shifts of the 1st UV–vis absorption bands.

Comparison of Magnetostrictive-Actuated Semi-Active Control Methods Based on Synchronized Switching

open access: yesActuators
Three distinct synchronized switching circuits based on a magnetostrictive actuator are compared in this paper to examine their control mechanisms and circuit characteristics.

Conditions for Singular Incidence Matrices [PDF]

open access: yes
Suppose one looks for a square integral matrixN, for which NN has a prescribed form. Then the Hasse-Minkowski invariants and the determinant of NN lead to necessary conditions for existence. The Bruck-Ryser-Chowla theorem gives a famous example of such ...

From Strain to Pressure: Atomically Resolved Mechanisms of Stress Dissipation in Emissive, Elastically Deformable Molecular Crystals Under Ambient and High Pressure

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Molecular crystals must withstand both isotropic and anisotropic stress to function in flexible optoelectronics and high‐pressure devices. In situ high‐pressure single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction coupled with DFT‐D computations reveal how an emissive molecular crystal with interdigitated packing bends elastically at ambient‐pressure and remains ...
