Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Estimation of insulin sensitivity from continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pump data in type 1 diabetes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia either due to a lack of secretion of the hormone insulin (Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, T1DM) or due to impaired action of this hormone (Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, T2DM).

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Identification of a Shiga toxin A‐derived peptide internalized into Gb3 receptor‐bearing cells via interaction with the Shiga toxin B subunit

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The process of internalization of the Shiga toxin A subunit via formation of a complex with the Shiga toxin B subunit, which specifically binds to the Gb3 receptor. The peptide is designed to act as a carrier of drugs into cancer cells. Here, we explored the potential of peptides derived from the catalytic A subunit of Shiga toxin (STxA) to be drug ...

An approach to the LQG/LTR design problem with specifications for finite-dimensional SISO control systems

open access: yesSystems Science & Control Engineering
This is an expository paper that discusses an approach to the linear quadratic Gaussian/loop transfer recovery (LQG/LTR) design problem for finite-dimensional single-variable (single-input/single-output, SISO) control systems.

Optimal Control for One-Qubit Quantum Sensing

open access: yesPhysical Review X, 2018
Quantum systems can be exquisite sensors thanks to their sensitivity to external perturbations. This same characteristic also makes them fragile to external noise. Quantum control can tackle the challenge of protecting a quantum sensor from environmental

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Centralized Hybrid Voltage Control of Active Distribution Network Using Recursive Least Squares Method for Sensitivity Estimation

open access: yesIEEE Access
This paper presents a hybrid centralized, optimal, adaptive, and data-driven Volt-VAR and Volt-Watt control framework for voltage regulation in distribution systems. The proposed methodology coordinates on-load tap changers (OLTC), distributed generation
