Temperature sensitivity of the body surface over the life span

Somatosensory & Motor Research, 1998
Detection thresholds to warming and cooling were measured in 13 regions of the body in 60 adults aged between 18 and 88 years. From these thresholds were constructed maps of thermal sensitivity homologous to body maps of spatial acuity (in the older literature two-point discrimination), long known to the somatosensory scientist.

Anticipating sensitizes the body

Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences, 2007
With emotional motivation the organism prepares the body to obtain a goal. There is an anticipatory sensitization of the sensory systems in the body and the brain. Presynaptic facilitation of the sensory afference in the spinal cord is probably involved.

Sensitive Bodies in the Cityscape

2018
Cities evolve to just possible, always uncertain urban futures, achieving complexity so this complexity becomes itself the best tool to face uncertainty. The main operation in urban systems evolution is difference, the establishment of traces indicating differences, differences themselves consisting of increasingly more complex systems of rules, like a

Sensitivity analysis of the human body mechanical model

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2000
AbstractThe mechanical model of human body is introduced. Model consists of rigid segments connected with joints. Articulated rigid‐multibody model is used as a tool for investigation of the injury mechanism during the car crush event. The sensitivity analysis of proposed mechanical model of human body is discussed.

Enzyme Core Spherical Nucleic Acid That Enables Enhanced Cuproptosis and Antitumor Immune Response through Alleviating Tumor Hypoxia.

Journal of the American Chemical Society
Cuproptosis, a copper-dependent cell death process, has been confirmed to further activate the immune response and mediate the immune resistance. However, hypoxic tumor microenvironment hampers cuproptosis sensitivity and suppresses the body's antitumor ...

Round-off sensitivity in the N-body problem

2007
The solutions to the equations of motion of the gravitational N-body problem are extremely sensitive to very small changes in initial conditions, resulting in a near-exponential growth of deviations between neighboring trajectories in the system’s 6N-dimensional global phase space.

The role of aesthetic sensitivity in body dysmorphic disorder.

Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 2011
Individuals with a higher aesthetic sensitivity may be more vulnerable to developing body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Aesthetic sensitivity has 3 components: (a) perceptual, (b) emotional, and (c) evaluative. Individuals with BDD (n = 50) were compared with a control group of individuals with an education or employment in art and design related fields ...

On the Vibrational Sensitivity in Different Regions of the Body Surface

Acta Physiologica Scandinavica, 1954
Summary.Vibratory thresholds in different parts of the body were determined with an electro‐dynamic apparatus. The lowest threshold amplitudes were found within the frequency range 200—450 Hz. In the finger‐tips these may be as small as 0.02 μp. Hands and the soles of the feet are most sensitive, whereas the vibratory thres‐hold values are highest in ...

The hormone-sensitive lipase gene and body composition: the HERITAGE Family Study

International Journal of Obesity, 2002
To investigate whether the C-60G polymorphism and other markers in the hormone-sensitive lipase (LIPE) gene are associated with baseline body composition and free-fatty acid (FFA) concentrations measured at rest and during low-intensity exercise in white and black subjects participating in the HERITAGE Family Study.Adult sedentary white (245 men and ...

Tackling Indifference—Clowning, Dementia, and the Articulation of a Sensitive Body

Medical Anthropology, 2012
In this auto-ethnographic study, I focus on a special form of clowning for people at an advanced stage of dementia. The miMakkus clown is presented as a specialist in contact with people with whom communication is no longer possible by the usual (linguistic, cognitive) means.
