Immersion challenge of three salmonid species (family Salmonidae) with three multilocus sequence typing variants of Flavobacterium psychrophilum provides evidence of differential host specificity

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Bacterial coldwater disease (BCWD), caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum, results in significant losses among multiple salmonid (family Salmonidae) species. Molecular epidemiology and serotyping studies have suggested that some variants are host specific; however, these associations have not been evaluated by cross‐challenging fish species ...

A review of Haemophilus influenzae disease in Europe from 2000–2014: challenges, successes and the contribution of hexavalent combination vaccines

open access: yesExpert Review of Vaccines, 2017
Introduction: The development of diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis-Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine combinations culminated with hexavalent vaccines, the largest, most complex vaccine combinations in the immunization calendar ...

Association of serotype with risk of death due to pneumococcal pneumonia: a meta-analysis.

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 2010
BACKGROUND The 92 capsular serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae differ greatly in nasopharyngeal carriage prevalence, invasiveness, and disease incidence.

Serotype-Specific Differences in the Risk of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever: An Analysis of Data Collected in Bangkok, Thailand from 1994 to 2006

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2010
Background It is unclear whether dengue serotypes differ in their propensity to cause severe disease. We analyzed differences in serotype-specific disease severity in children presenting for medical attention in Bangkok, Thailand.

Occupationally Relevant Zinc‐ and Copper‐Containing Metal Fumes Inhibit Human THP‐1 Macrophage TNF and IL‐6 Responses to Bacterial Stimuli

open access: yesGlobal Challenges, EarlyView.
Metal workers have an increased risk of severe pneumonia due to metal fume exposure. In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper oxide (CuO) particles are found to inhibit specific anti‐bacterial macrophage responses, which may substantially contribute to impaired lung immunity.

Infection severity across scales in multi-strain immuno-epidemiological Dengue model structured by host antibody level [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Infection by distinct Dengue virus serotypes and host immunity are intricately linked. In particular, certain levels of cross-reactive antibodies in the host may actually enhance infection severity leading to Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). The coupled immunological and epidemiological dynamics of Dengue calls for a multi-scale modeling approach.

Global Dissemination of Vibrio parahaemolyticus Serotype O3:K6 and Its Serovariants

open access: yesClinical Microbiology Reviews, 2007
SUMMARY Vibrio parahaemolyticus is recognized as a cause of food-borne gastroenteritis, particularly in the Far East, where raw seafood consumption is high. An unusual increase in admissions of V.

The complexity of serotype replacement of pneumococci [PDF]

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, 2019
Pneumococci respond extremely rapidly to the vaccine pressure created by the conjugate vaccines (PCVs). Vaccine serotypes are disappearing, meanwhile new, often previously very rare types are emerging, and it is difficult to establish what makes certain serotypes more successful in replacement.
