Concurrent Serotyping and Genotyping of Pneumococci by Use of PCR and Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology, 2012
A pneumococcal serotyping/genotyping system (PSGS) was developed based upon targeted PCR, followed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and amplicon base composition analysis.

A review of bacterial disease outbreaks in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) reported from 2010 to 2022

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Outbreaks of bacterial infections in aquaculture have emerged as significant threats to the sustainable production of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) worldwide. Understanding the dynamics of these outbreaks and the bacteria involved is crucial for implementing effective management strategies. This comprehensive review presents an update on

Sequetyping: Serotyping Streptococcus pneumoniae by a Single PCR Sequencing Strategy

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology, 2012
The introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines necessitates continued monitoring of circulating strains to assess vaccine efficacy and replacement serotypes.

Immersion challenge of three salmonid species (family Salmonidae) with three multilocus sequence typing variants of Flavobacterium psychrophilum provides evidence of differential host specificity

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Bacterial coldwater disease (BCWD), caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum, results in significant losses among multiple salmonid (family Salmonidae) species. Molecular epidemiology and serotyping studies have suggested that some variants are host specific; however, these associations have not been evaluated by cross‐challenging fish species ...

Complete Genome Sequence of Bluetongue Virus Serotype 9: Implications for Serotyping

open access: yesJournal of Virology, 2012
The second complete genome of bluetongue virus serotype 9 (BTV-9) is presented in this report. The sequence analysis points to continued circulation in India of a mixed topotype virus apparently belonging to the BTV-9 serotype, and it raises questions ...

Occupationally Relevant Zinc‐ and Copper‐Containing Metal Fumes Inhibit Human THP‐1 Macrophage TNF and IL‐6 Responses to Bacterial Stimuli

open access: yesGlobal Challenges, EarlyView.
Metal workers have an increased risk of severe pneumonia due to metal fume exposure. In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper oxide (CuO) particles are found to inhibit specific anti‐bacterial macrophage responses, which may substantially contribute to impaired lung immunity.

Improved Detection of Nasopharyngeal Cocolonization by Multiple Pneumococcal Serotypes by Use of Latex Agglutination or Molecular Serotyping by Microarray

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology, 2011
Identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the nasopharynx is critical for an understanding of transmission, estimates of vaccine efficacy, and possible replacement disease.

Silver Nanoparticle‐Mediated Antiviral Efficacy against Enveloped Viruses: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesGlobal Challenges, EarlyView.
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) exhibit broad‐spectrum antiviral activity by targeting key viral structures and processes. They disrupt viral envelopes, compromising integrity, and bind to nucleocapsids, impairing viral replication. AgNPs also inhibit glycoprotein interactions, preventing viral attachment and entry into host cells.
