The evolving system of Trypillian settlements [PDF]
Archaeological settlement systems are usually analysed in terms of the relation between the rank of a settlement and its size (Zipf's law). We argue that this approach is unreliable, and can be misleading, in application to archaeological data where the recovery rate of settlements can be low and their size estimates are often approximate at best.

Immunoregulatory mechanisms of the arachidonic acid pathway in cancer
The central role of the arachidonic acid (AA) pathway in anticancer immunity. Enzymes and metabolites of the AA pathway can play both immunosuppressive and immunostimulatory roles in the tumor microenvironment. Therefore, their tailored targeting could be beneficial as a standalone therapy or in combination with current cancer immunotherapy.

Quantum Algorithms for Mixed Binary Optimization applied to Transaction Settlement [PDF]
We extend variational quantum optimization algorithms for Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization problems to the class of Mixed Binary Optimization problems. This allows us to combine binary decision variables with continuous decision variables, which, for instance, enables the modeling of inequality constraints via slack variables. We propose two

Chemical mediation of coral larval settlement by crustose coralline algae
The majority of marine invertebrates produce dispersive larvae which, in order to complete their life cycles, must attach and metamorphose into benthic forms. This process, collectively referred to as settlement, is often guided by habitat-specific cues.

The Jewish 'ghetto': formation and spatial structure [PDF]
Research into patterns of immigrant settlement has consistently indicated that certain areas of cities are prone to settlement by immigrant groups. This paper proposes that immigrant settlement of such areas may have a particular spacial pattern.

Unraveling Mycobacterium tuberculosis acid resistance and pH homeostasis mechanisms
Mycobacterium tuberculosis exhibits a remarkable resilience to acid stress. In this Review, we discuss some of the molecular mechanisms and metabolic pathways used by the tubercle bacilli to adapt and resist host‐mediated acid stress. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is a successful pathogen that has developed a variety of strategies to survive and ...

Evaluating the importance of environmental factors on the spatial distribution of livestock settlements in the Monte desert with a Monte Carlo based model: Settlement Dynamics in Drylands (SeDD) [PDF]
In the Monte desert, increasing population density, changing land rights and infrastructure may encourage livestock activity, with unknown consequences on ecosystems. Factors that influence livestock settlement distribution may affect ecosystem degradation.
