Antimicrobial prescribing guidelines for horses in Australia

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, Volume 103, Issue 12, Page 781-889, December 2025.
The growing problem of antimicrobial resistance also affects equine veterinarians with increasing frequency. Antimicrobial stewardship and responsible prescribing are essential for a future in which effective antimicrobials are available, as it is unlikely that new antimicrobials will become available for use in horses.

Evaluation of Owner‐Reported Clinical Signs and Fecal Occult Blood Tests as Predictors of Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome in Competition Dressage Horses

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Volume 39, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) adversely affects the health, welfare, and performance of sports horses, requiring gastroscopy for definitive diagnosis. Owners frequently consider girth aversion as highly suggestive of EGUS. Objectives To evaluate whether owner‐reported clinical signs or fecal occult blood tests (FOBTs) can ...

Clinical variability of equine asthma phenotypes and analysis of diagnostic steps in phenotype differentiation

open access: yesActa Veterinaria Scandinavica
Background Equine asthma is a common, non-infectious, chronic lung disease that affects up to 80% of the horse population. Strict phenotyping and identification of subclinically asthmatic horses can be challenging.

Inhaled ciclesonide is efficacious and well tolerated in the treatment of severe equine asthma in a large prospective European clinical trial:Inhaled ciclesonide in horses with severe equine asthma

open access: yes, 2021
Background: Ciclesonide is a glucocorticoid prodrug, already registered for human use. Due to its mode of action and inhaled route of administration, it was considered an appropriate treatment option for horses with severe equine asthma. Although the efficacy of inhaled ciclesonide has been demonstrated in horses with asthma exacerbations under ...

MARCKS protein is a potential target in a naturally occurring equine model of neutrophilic asthma

open access: yesRespiratory Research
Background Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Horses develop asthma spontaneously and serve as a relevant model for multiple phenotypes and endotypes of human asthma.

Development of a comprehensive protein microarray for immunoglobulin E profiling in horses with severe asthma

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 2019
Background Severe asthma in horses, known as severe equine asthma (SEA), is a prevalent, performance‐limiting disease associated with increased allergen‐specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) against a range of environmental aeroallergens.

Assessment of pulmonary vascular smooth muscle remodeling in severe equine asthma

open access: yes, 2017
Severe equine asthma (SEA) is characterized by reversible airway obstruction and hypoxemia. Pulmonary hypoxic vasoconstriction occurs during SEA exacerbation, inducing pulmonary hypertension (PH). However, PH is only partially reversed by oxygen administration, and other etiological factors are uninvestigated (Dixon 1978).

Surgical Assessment and Post-Operative Complications Following Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) of Horses with Severe Equine Pasture Asthma During Asthma Exacerbation and Remission

open access: yesAnimals
The aim of this retrospective clinical study was to assess surgical duration and surgical and post-operative complications associated with Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) and lung biopsy in horses with severe Equine Pasture Asthma (EPA) and ...
