Sex Differences in Primary HIV Infection: Revisiting the Role of TLR7-Driven Type 1 IFN Production by Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells in Women

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2021
Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) produce type I interferon (IFN-I) during HIV-1 infection in response to TLR7 stimulation. However, IFN-I-signaling has been shown to play opposite effects in HIV-1 and SIV infection.

On the systematic bias in skeletal sexing [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Physical Anthropology, 1972
AbstractComparison of a large series of sexed adult skeletal populations and a similar series of adult pre‐industrial peoples shows that there is a regular and systematic bias in the sexing of adult skeletons. This bias, which is about 12% in favor of males, is due to the nature of secondary sex characteristics in bone.

Male-Biased microRNA Discovery in the Pea Aphid

open access: yesInsects, 2021
Epigenetic mechanisms modulate gene expression levels during development, shaping how a single genome produces a diversity of phenotypes. Here, we begin to explore the epigenetic regulation of sexual dimorphism in pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum) by ...

An assessment of sex bias in neurodevelopmental disorders [PDF]

open access: yesGenome Medicine, 2015
Neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and intellectual disability have a sex bias skewed towards boys; however, systematic assessment of this bias is complicated by the presence of significant genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity of these disorders. To assess the extent and characteristics of sex bias, we analyzed the frequency of comorbid ...
