Sex hormone-binding globulin in osteoporosis [PDF]
Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a plasma glycoprotein that binds with high affinity to sex steroids, most notably 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone, testosterone, and 17beta-estradiol, thereby regulating their bioavailability and access to target cells. SHBG modulates the sex-steroid signaling system by binding to a specific membrane receptor (SHBG-R).

Interactions of sex hormone-binding globulin with target cells
Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, 2010Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) was initially described as a plasma protein synthesized in, and secreted by, the liver. It was discovered by its ability to bind certain androgens and estrogens and, for many years, was believed to serve as a transporter/reservoir for the steroids which it bound.

The association of sex hormone-binding globulin with mortality is mediated by age and testosterone in men with type 2 diabetes [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Serum sex hormone-binding globulin levels have been associated with mortality in adult men with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). OBJECTIVES: To confirm the association of serum sex hormone-binding globulin with mortality and then determine ...

Sex hormone–binding globulin: biomarker and hepatokine?
Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism, 2021Over the past decade, there have been important breakthroughs in our understanding of the regulation and function of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). A recent genome-wide association and Mendelian randomization study has provided new insights at the population level.

Sex Hormone Binding Globulin and Aging
Hormone and Metabolic Research, 2008New and more active concepts of steroid binding globulin action are emerging from recent research. As a result, examination of steroid levels in aging humans and the role of steroid binding globulins need to be re-visited. This review will discuss the possibility that sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) plays an active role in the aging process.

SEX HORMONE BINDING GLOBULIN IN SALIVA
Clinical Endocrinology, 1988SUMMARYMeasurement of salivary steroid hormone concentrations has frequently been advocated as a convenient alternative to plasma measurements. This is partly due to the belief that salivary steroid concentrations are a reliable reflection of the plasma free hormone level, a belief reinforced by earlier inability to demonstrate the presence of ...

Sex-Hormone-Binding Globulin is an Oestrogen Amplifier
Nature, 1972WE suggest a novel biological role for a specific plasma-binding protein in the regulation of oestrogen and androgen activity in man. The biological activity of oestradiol and testosterone, as with other steroids1, is probably exerted by the unbound fraction in plasma; this is only 1–3% of the total concentration.

Sex hormone binding globulin in breast cancer
La Ricerca in Clinica e in Laboratorio, 1980Using a binding assay for sex hormone binding globulin, a Japanese group showed that they could select breast cancer patients more likely to be responsive to endocrine therapy, i.e. oestrogen receptor positive patients, by an increase in oestrogen binding capacity of the protein.
