Septic Shock in Pyogenic Liver Abscess: Clinical Considerations

open access: yesThe Korean Journal of Gastroenterology, 2016
Background : /Aims: Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a life-threatening condition, despite advances in diagnostic technology and strategies for treatment. A strong predictor of mortality in this condition is septic shock.

Photo‐Biomodulation of the Hippocampus Using Near‐Infrared Laser to Enhance Cognitive Function in Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Here a transcranial photo‐biomodulation approach is developed using near‐infrared (NIR) laser on hippocampus of mice, revealing significant improvements in learning and memory ability of mice under normal and disease conditions. The improvement results from the high‐density cell‐induced NIR local energy deposition, neuronal activation, and axonogenesis

Ethylene‐Activated E3 Ubiquitin Ligase MdEAEL1 Promotes Apple Fruit Softening by Facilitating the Dissociation of Transcriptional Repressor Complexes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Ethylene‐activated MdEAEL1 mediates the disassembly of the MdZFP3‐MdTPL4‐MdHDA19 transcriptional repression complex, upregulating the histone acetylation levels in the promoter regions of cell wall degradation‐related genes, consequently promoting softening during storage.

Genetic variants in SERPINA4 and SERPINA5, but not BCL2 and SIK3 are associated with acute kidney injury in critically ill patients with septic shock [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a multifactorial syndrome, but knowledge about its pathophysiology and possible genetic background is limited.

Virome and Experimental Analysis Reveal Tryptophan‐Like Dissolved Organic Matter Contributes to the Persistence of Plant Viruses in River Water

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tryptophan‐like dissolved organic matter (Try‐like DOM), a key component of organic matter in river ecosystems, demonstrates significant protective effects against plant viruses. The protective mechanism operates via a “swimming firewall” mode, whereby free Try‐like DOM attenuates ultraviolet (UV) radiation and scavenges reactive oxygen species ...

QSOX2‐Mediated Disulfide Bond Modification Enhances Tumor Stemness and Chemoresistance by Activating TSC2/mTOR/c‐Myc Feedback Loop in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
High QSOX2 enhances stemness, drug resistance, and metastasis of ESCC cells. QSOX2‐mediated disulfide bond modification activates mTOR/c‐Myc signaling. CAFs‐secreted IGF‐1 drives mTOR/c‐Myc/QSOX2 positive feedback loop. Combining Ebselen, rapamycin, and cisplatin induces tumor dormancy in mice.

Oxytocin‐Mediate Modulation of Splenic Immunosuppression in Chronic Social Stress Through Neuroendocrine Pathways

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Chronic social stress elevates oxytocin levels, leading to immunosuppression by enhancing regulatory T‐cell activity and promoting anti‐inflammatory macrophage polarization in the spleen. Blocking oxytocin signaling reverses these effects but worsens stress‐induced behavioral disorders and reduces survival rates. This highlights oxytocin's dual role in

The Neuropathology of Septic Shock

open access: yesBrain Pathology, 2004
The neuropathological correlates of encephalopathy and autonomic dysfuction in septic shock are unclear. We performed post mortem analysis of 5 brain areas susceptible to ischemia and 5 autonomic nuclei (AN) in 23 pqtients who had died in our intensive care unit (ICU) from septic shock and 8 dying from non‐septic shock as well as 5 controls who had ...

Polymer Brush‐Based Asymmetric Porous Patch with Excellent Anti‐Bacterial and Anti‐Contamination Properties Enables Infectious Abdominal Wall Defect Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A zwitterionic asymmetric patch is developed via self‐induced phase separation. The cationic layer exhibits anti‐bacterial efficacy and releases pro‐healing factor, while the zwitterionic hydrogel prevents contamination and visceral adhesion. The strong mechanical interlocking of two layers leads to a high and stable burst pressure tolerance.

The Severity of Injury and the Extent of Hemorrhagic Shock Predict the Incidence of Infectious Complications in Trauma Patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
: Background: : Trauma patients are at high risk of developing systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the severity of injury and the extent of hemorrhagic shock at admission ...
