Attributing Upper‐Tropospheric Warm Biases in CMIP6 Models to Ice Cloud‐Radiation Interaction Deficiencies Over Tropical Oceans

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract We assess the impact of hydrometeor radiative effects on tropical and subtropical Pacific air temperature anomalies (TAA) using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) model simulations and satellite data. CMIP6 models are grouped by their treatment of frozen hydrometeors: SON2 (explicit cloud and falling ice), SON1 (simplified),

Assessing Earth's Energy Imbalance Trend in the Early 21st Century in Two High‐Resolution Coupled Models

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Satellite observations since 2001 show an increasing Earth's energy imbalance (EEI) at the top of the atmosphere of 0.45 W m−2 dec−1, a trend understated in coupled climate models. We assess the 2001–2024 EEI trend in historical simulations of two high‐resolution coupled models, CM4X, a revised version of CM4.0, and CESM‐HR, a high‐resolution ...

Atlas of albedo and absorbed solar radiation derived from Nimbus 6 earth radiation budget data set, July 1975 to May 1978 [PDF]

open access: yes
An atlas of monthly mean global contour maps of albedo and absorbed solar radiation is presented. The atlas is based on 35 months of continuous measurements from July 1975 through May 1978.

Terrestrial Runoff Divides the Central Arctic Ocean and Shapes the Biologically Relevant Marine Lightscape

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract The Arctic Ocean is undergoing drastic changes in its sea ice cover, but is also optically complex. Observations from summer 2022 across the western Eurasian Basin, show increased colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption from terrestrial‐derived runoff within the Transpolar Drift (TPD) in the Amundsen Basin, extending down to a depth

Effect of solar zenith angle specification in models on mean shortwave fluxes and stratospheric temperatures

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
Many weather and climate models call their radiation schemes only every 3 h, which we show can lead to a stratospheric temperature overestimate of 3–5 K and wavenumber 8 fluctuations in top‐of‐atmosphere (TOA) net shortwave flux around the tropics of ...

Reduction of Rainfall During Tropical Cyclone Passage by Kuroshio Large Meander: A Case Study of Tropical Cyclone Talas (2011)

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Tropical cyclone (TC) intensity and associated rainfall depend on sea surface temperature (SST). SSTs in southern Japan, which are often hit by TCs, are likely influenced by the path of the Kuroshio. During the Kuroshio large meander (KLM), Kuroshio creates a coexistence of local warm and cold SST anomalies near the Japanese coast.

Clouds in the atmospheres of extrasolar planets. IV. On the scattering greenhouse effect of CO2 ice particles: Numerical radiative transfer studies

open access: yes, 2013
Owing to their wavelengths dependent absorption and scattering properties, clouds have a strong impact on the climate of planetary atmospheres. Especially, the potential greenhouse effect of CO2 ice clouds in the atmospheres of terrestrial extrasolar ...

An Optimized Parameterization of Sub‐Grid Scale Advection for Convection Permitting Models

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Convection‐permitting models (CPMs) explicitly resolve deep convection yet under‐resolve the organized lateral exchanges among drafts and their environment that control entrainment/detrainment, precipitation efficiency, and mesoscale structure.

Machine Learning‐Based Analysis of Atmospheric Process Sensitivity to Land Surface Properties Over Complex Terrain

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract This study investigates the sensitivity of numerical simulations of atmospheric processes over complex terrain to land surface model (LSM) parameters, focusing on thermally driven circulations in an idealized valley. The sensitivity analysis is performed using the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the Noah‐MP LSM, for forest ...
