Oxidation effects during laser cladding of aluminium with SiC/Al powders [PDF]
Aluminium substrates were covered with a layer of an Al-SiC powder mixture. The surface was scanned with a laser beam during which the surface was melted. The top layer of the laser tracks contained oxide plates apart from some large SiC particles. In the bottom layer a cellular network was found with aluminium cells and silicon-rich cell walls.

ABSTRACT Chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) is widely used to manufacture ceramic matrix composites, but deposition non‐uniformity and premature pore closure still limit processing time and cost. CVI operates at low pressures and in microscale pores, where non‐equilibrium gas transport develops, making common continuum assumptions unreliable.

The present work shows the cladding process of silicon carbide on the substrate of prepared composite (Al 2024/Alumina/Mn) by using a laser beam (pulsed Nd-YAG). To obtain the desired results, the best laser parameters were chosen.
