Abstract It was found that steroidal bile acids have greatly different inclusion abilities with decreasing or increasing their side chain length. Namely, the acids with intermediate side chains formed inclusion compounds with various organic compounds, while those with shorter or longer chains did not include so many.

Side-chain liquid-crystalline copolymers containing spacers of differing lengths

Copolymers [CH 2 CHPh(R 1 )] 0.5 [CH 2 CHPh(R 2 )] 0.5 (R 1 = O(CH 2 ) 8 OPhN=NPhOMe; R 2 = O(Ch 2 ) n OPhN=NPhOMe n = 3-12) are prepared and compared with the homopolymers [CH 2 CHPh(R 2 )] m . All the polymers exhibit smectic behaviour with the exception of the homopolymer with n = 3for which no mesophase was observed.

AbstractA series of soluble polymers was prepared by copolymerization of the 4‐nitrophenol ester of N‐methacryloylated ω‐amino acids (1a – i), of N‐methacryloyldiglycine (2b), of 6‐(N‐methacryloylglycylamino)‐ and of 6‐(N‐methacryloylglycylglycylamino)hexanoic acid (3a and 3b) with N‐(2‐hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA).

The effect of isoprenoid side chain length of ubiquinone on life span

The isoprenoid side chain length of ubiquinone (Q) can have an effect on the life span of mammals. The short living mouse and rat have Q(9), while primates have Q(10) as the major form. Ubiquinones (Qs) having longer hydrophobic tail are likely more imbedded in the mitochondrial inner membrane than the ones having shorter tails.

Microphase separation of comb copolymers with two different lengths of side chains

The phase behavior of the monodisperse AB comb copolymer melt contained the macromolecules of special architecture is discussed. Each macromolecule is assumed to be composed of two comb blocks which differ in numbers of side chains and numbers of monomer units in these chains.

On the relation between side chain length and RM value

Abstract A study was made of the R M values, given in the literature, of a wide variety of organic compounds forming homologous series. An equation is proposed in which the R M value is related to the number of carbon atoms in the members of the homologous series.
