PING‐Mapper: Open‐Source Software for Automated Benthic Imaging and Mapping Using Recreation‐Grade Sonar

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, 2022
The characterization of benthic habitats is essential for aquatic ecosystem science and management, but is frequently limited by waterbody visibility and depth. Recreation‐grade side‐scan sonar systems are increasingly used to aid scientific inquiries in

Side-Scan Sonar Applications for Evaluating Coastal Structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
Applications of side-scan sonar for inspecting coastal structures were evaluated. Results were based on 6 years of structure inspections, including structures on the Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf, and Great Lakes coasts of the United States. Most of the structures inspected were jetties and breakwaters; however, applications for vertical wall structures and ...

Side-Scan Sonar Image Generation Under Zero and Few Samples for Underwater Target Detection

open access: yesRemote Sensing
The acquisition of side-scan sonar (SSS) images is complex, expensive, and time-consuming, making it difficult and sometimes impossible to obtain rich image data.

Sub‐annual spatiotemporal dynamics of sediment and organic matter storage in beaver ponds

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 2, February 2026.
Ponds higher up the beaver cascades showed increasing erosion of sediments following heavier rainfall events, whereas those further down showed increasing sediment accretion. Following periods with less intense rainfall all ponds showed net sediment accretion.

Reviewing seas of data: Integrating image‐based bio‐logging and artificial intelligence to enhance marine conservation

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 2, Page 272-290, February 2026.
Abstract Conservation of marine ecosystems can be improved through a better understanding of ecosystem functioning, particularly the cryptic underwater behaviours and interactions of marine predators. Image‐based bio‐logging devices (including images, videos and active acoustic) are increasingly used to monitor wildlife movements, foraging behaviours ...

Multispectral Data and LiDAR for Enhanced Georeferencing of Gdanska Glowa's 17th‐Century Fortifications

open access: yesArchaeometry, Volume 68, Issue 1, Page 94-106, February 2026.
ABSTRACT This study presents a novel remote sensing method to detect 17th‐century environmental elements associated with the historical fortifications of Gdanska Glowa in Poland. By integrating 10‐band multispectral imaging, high‐resolution (1 m) digital elevation models, vegetation metrics and random forest classification within Google Earth Engine ...

Side‐Scan Sonar as a Tool For Measuring Fish Populations: Current State of the Science and Future Directions

open access: yesFisheries
Side‐scan sonar (SSS) is a powerful tool that can be used to address many key questions in fisheries science. In principle, SSS uses dual transducers to transmit a narrow‐beam, wide‐angle acoustic signal as the survey vessel transits an area.
