New Capabilities for Side-Scan Sonar
1998Now that side-scan sonar has become a generally accepted remote sensing tool, technical developments are proceeding at a rapid pace. Until recently, basic systems primarily used straightforward analog signal processing, and digital techniques were confined to recorder functions such as stepping motor drivers.

Segmentation of Side Scan Sonar Images on AUV
2019 IEEE Underwater Technology (UT), 2019Side scan sonar is an active sonar. It uses seafloor backscattering to obtain the topographic information of the seabed, and constructs seabed topographic image information, which is the basis of seabed imaging. For AUV equipped with side scan sonar, the interpretation of sonar images is beneficial to enhance their autonomy.

Processing of the information from side-scan sonar
SPIE Proceedings, 2016The kinetic model, describing sound propagation in a randomly inhomogeneous medium with diffuse reflection by Lambert's cosine law on the bottom surface, is considered. Based on it the inverse problem of bottom scattering reconstruction is formulated.

Historical development of side scan sonar
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2017The seabed mapping side scan sonar, conceived and developed in the 1950s at the U.S. Navy Mine Defense Laboratory (USNMDL) [Commander and Sternlicht, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 137, 2307 (2015)], was inspired by the Royal Navy ASDIC Type-162, a late-WWII hull mounted side-looking sonar capable of recording the silhouettes of bottomed U-boats. The commissioned

Classification and mosaicking of side scan sonar image
OCEANS 2017 - Aberdeen, 2017As an underwater detection sensor, side-scan sonar plays an important role in marine survey, mineral exploration, underwater archaeology and so on. During the use of side-scan sonar, classifiication and mosaicking of collected images is essential in most cases. There are two main contributions in our work.

Side Scan Sonar Object Classification Algorithms
Proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Unmanned Untethered Submersible Technology,, 2005Autonomous underwater vehicles require the capability to understand their environment. This understanding, coupled with the operational goals of the vehicle, determines the subsequent actions of the vehicle. Environmental understanding is realized through the vehicle's sensors and a priori knowledge. This paper focuses on our investigation of automatic

The improvement of side-scan sonar's towfish
2011 Second International Conference on Mechanic Automation and Control Engineering, 2011Since our first side-scan sonar was used more than twenty years. With more and more users and the using times grown up, We found something was not very convenient during using. So we have made some change in the design along with the users experience. This article introduce the improvement of the side-scan sonar's towfish.

The first geological use of side‐scan sonar
Geology Today, 1992Side‐scan sonar is now a sophisticated tool providing high‐quality data on the ocean floor. In its early days, however, it gave discouraging results, and for many years it seemed as if it would never provide useful geological information at all.

Side scan sonar image formation, restoration and modelling
1996The research described in this thesis was carried out in collaboration with Geoteam - Wimpol UK Ltd., between the October 1992 and October 1995 at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. The work deals principally with the development of processing algorithms for sonar image enhancement. The thesis is divided into two principal parts.
