Silicon nanowire-based solar cells

Nanotechnology, 2008
The fabrication of silicon nanowire-based solar cells on silicon wafers and on multicrystalline silicon thin films on glass is described. The nanowires show a strong broadband optical absorption, which makes them an interesting candidate to serve as an absorber in solar cells.

Sawtooth Faceting in Silicon Nanowires

Physical Review Letters, 2005
We observe in situ the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth of Si nanowires, in UHV-CVD using Au catalyst. The nanowire sidewalls exhibit periodic sawtooth faceting, reflecting an oscillatory growth process. We interpret the facet alternation as resulting from the interplay of the geometry and surface energies of the wire and liquid droplet.

Small-Diameter Silicon Nanowire Surfaces

Science, 2003
Small-diameter (1 to 7 nanometers) silicon nanowires (SiNWs) were prepared, and their surfaces were removed of oxide and terminated with hydrogen by a hydrofluoric acid dip. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of these SiNWs, performed both in air and in ultrahigh vacuum, revealed atomically resolved images that can be interpreted as ...

Silicon Nanowire Array Photoelectrochemical Cells

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2007
Silicon nanowire arrays were grown by vapor−liquid−solid growth from SiH4 vapor at 500 °C, and tested as photocathodes in [Ru(bpy)3]2+ (bpy = 2,2‘-bipyridyl)/acetonitrile solutions. Si nanowires were grown in anodic aluminum oxide membranes by first electroplating 50 μm long Co wires capped with 250 nm gold segments in the pores and then reacting with ...

Metal-Semiconductor Nanocontacts: Silicon Nanowires

Physical Review Letters, 2000
Silicon nanowires assembled from clusters or etched from the bulk, connected to aluminum electrodes and passivated, are studied with large-scale local-density-functional simulations. Short ( approximately 0.6 nm) wires are fully metallized by metal-induced gap states resulting in finite conductance ( approximately e(2)/h).

Reversible Electrowetting on Superhydrophobic Silicon Nanowires

Nano Letters, 2007
This paper reports for the first time on the reversible electrowetting of liquid droplets in air and oil environments on superhydrophobic silicon nanowires (SiNWs). The silicon nanowires were grown on Si/SiO2 substrates using the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism, electrically insulated using 300 nm SiO2, and hydrophobized by coating with a ...
