The 'Simple View' of Reading: Some evidence and possible implications

open access: closedEducational Psychology in Practice, 2001
This article explores components of reading accuracy and comprehension in 14 teenagers. The study contrasted the explanatory power of decoding and listening comprehension subskills (the 'simple view of reading'; Gough & Tunmer, 1990), and 'verbal cognitive ability' (a more traditional psychometric model).

The Simple View of Reading: A Developmental Perspective

1998
Nearly all reading problems are due to recognizing words or comprehending language (Daneman, 1991). The idea that reading consists of only two components, word recognition and language comprehension, has been called the ‘simple view of reading’ (Gough & Tunmer, 1986; Hoover & Gough, 1990).

Unpacking the Simple View of Reading for Struggling Adult Readers

Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2020
The Simple View of Reading (SVR), which posits that reading comprehension is the product of decoding and linguistic comprehension, has been studied extensively with school-age readers. However, little is known about the intricacies of the SVR for adults who struggle with reading.

Is the Simple View of Reading too Simple?

Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 2010
According to the Simple View of Reading (SVR), reading comprehension is the product of word decoding ability and linguistic comprehension (R = D × C). However, there is also evidence showing that an additive model (R = D + C) explains just as much or even more of the variance in reading comprehension than the product model.

Simple View of Reading in Chinese: A One-Stage Meta-Analytic Structural Equation Modeling

, 2020
With a one-stage meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) analysis based on 49,416 individuals from 267 independent samples and 210 studies, the current study systematically investigated models including meta-linguistic skills, decoding ...

Fluency Has a Role in the Simple View of Reading

Scientific Studies of Reading, 2013
The Simple View of Reading (SVR) suggests that the components of reading comprehension are decoding and linguistic comprehension. Given research that suggests that fluency is a separate construct from decoding and linguistic comprehension in fourth grade, the aim of this study was to examine the role of fluency in the SVR model.

Examining the Simple View of Reading With Elementary School Children: Still Simple After All These Years

Remedial and special education, 2018
The simple view of reading (SVR) proposes that performance in reading comprehension is the result of decoding and linguistic comprehension, and that each component is necessary but not sufficient for reading comprehension.

A latent variable approach to the simple view of reading

Reading and Writing, 2010
The present study utilized a latent variable modeling approach to examine the Simple View of Reading in a sample of students from 3rd, 7th, and 10th grades (N = 215, 188, and 180, respectively). Latent interaction modeling and other latent variable models were employed to investigate (a) the functional form of the relationship between decoding and ...

Can the simple view deal with the complexities of reading?

Literacy, 2008
AbstractWe review the Simple View of Reading (SVR) model and examine its nature, applicability and validity. We describe the SVR as an abstract framework for understanding the relationship between global linguistic comprehension and word‐reading abilities in reading comprehension (RC).

Simple view of second language reading: A meta-analytic structural equation modeling approach

Scientific Studies of Reading, 2022
Purpose The present study aimed to systemically summarize the structural relationships among correlated components of second language (L2) reading comprehension to investigate the extent to which the two major components – language comprehension ...
