Object-Oriented Simulation Model Generation in an Automated Control Software Development Framework [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Organised by: Cranfield UniversityThe automated development of control software for mechatronic systems requires the integration of control models for design and verification purposes.

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

On the design of hybrid simulation models, focussing on the agent-based system dynamics combination [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
©Cranfield University, 2014There is a growing body of literature reporting the application of hybrid simulations to inform decision making. However, guidance for the design of such models, where the output depends upon more than one modelling paradigm ...

C2α‐carbanion‐protonating glutamate discloses tradeoffs between substrate accommodation and reaction rate in actinobacterial 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Enzymes of the 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase group catalyze the condensation of formyl‐CoA with aldehydes or ketones. Thus, by structural adaptation of active sites, practically any pharmaceutically and industrially important 2‐hydroxyacid could be biotechnologically synthesized. Combining crystal structure analysis, active site mutations and kinetic assays,

Modelling iteration in engineering design

open access: yes, 2007
This paper examines design iteration and its modelling in the simulation of New Product Development (NPD) processes. A framework comprising six perspectives of iteration is proposed and it is argued that the importance of each perspective depends upon ...

Structural Design Using Simulation Based Reliability Assessment

open access: yesActa Polytechnica, 2001
The concept of Simulation Based Reliability Assessment (SBRA) for Civil Engineering structures is presented. SBRA uses bounded histograms to represent variable material and geometric properties as well as variable load effects, and makes use of the Monte

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Design Heuristics for Authentic Simulation-Based Learning Games

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, 2014
Simulation games are games for learning based on a reference in the real world. We propose a model for authenticity in this context as a result of a compromise among learning, playing and realism. In the health game used to apply this model, students interact with characters in the game through phone messages, mail messages, SMS and video.
