Josephson junction infrared single-photon detector [PDF]

open access: yesScience, 2021
A junction for single-photon detection Josephson junctions are simple superconducting devices comprising an insulator or semiconductor separating two superconducting regions. They form the workhorse of superconducting technologies and are exquisitely sensitive to magnetic field.

Terahertz single photon detectors [PDF]

open access: yesSCIENTIA SINICA Physica, Mechanica & Astronomica, 2021
Terahertz detection plays an increasingly important role in various fields, such as astronomy, national defense, security checking, and biotechnology. With the development of technology, the sensitivity of terahertz detectors is continuously improving, and the detection of terahertz single photons has been demonstrated in recent years. In the terahertz

Photoconductance quantization in a single-photon detector [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review B, 2002
We have made a single-photon detector that relies on photoconductive gain in a narrow electron channel in an AlGaAs/GaAs 2-dimensional electron gas. Given that the electron channel is 1-dimensional, the photo-induced conductance has plateaus at multiples of the quantum conductance 2e$^{2}$/h.

Characterising a Single-Photon Detector for ALPS II

open access: yesJournal of Low Temperature Physics, 2022
AbstractTransition Edge Sensors (TESs) have found widespread application in fundamental studies due to their low background rate, high efficiency, and excellent energy resolution. This makes them suitable candidates for ALPS II, which investigates the existence of new particles (axions and axion-like-particles) which couple very weakly to photons. ALPS

Niobium Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2009
We investigate the performance of superconducting nanowire photon detectors fabricated from ultra-thin Nb. A direct comparison is made between these detectors and similar nanowire detectors fabricated from NbN. We find that Nb detectors are significantly more susceptible than NbN to thermal instability (latching) at high bias.

Advantages of gated silicon single-photon detectors [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Optics, 2012
We present a gated silicon single photon detector based on a commercially available avalanche photodiode. Our detector achieves a photon detection efficiency of 45\pm5% at 808 nm with 2x 10^-6 dark count per ns at -30V of excess bias and -30°C. We compare gated and free-running detectors and show that this mode of operation has significant advantages ...

CMOS-compatible self-quenched active recovery (SQUARE) single-photon detector

open access: yesAPL Photonics, 2023
Current CMOS single-photon detectors operating in Geiger mode use passive quenching, yielding slow recovery due to the RC delay. Active quenching of CMOS photon detectors operating in the Geiger mode requires external quenching circuitry that occupies a ...

Detection of On-Chip Generated Weak Microwave Radiation Using Superconducting Normal-Metal SET

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2016
The present work addresses quantum interaction phenomena of microwave radiation with a single-electron tunneling system. For this study, an integrated circuit is implemented, combining on the same chip a Josephson junction (Al/AlO
