Single Photon Avalanche Diodes for space applications

2011 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record, 2011
We study the possibility to use Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs) optically coupled to scintillating fibers as a novel type of gamma-ray detector for space applications. SPADs are silicon devices operating under polarization conditions above the junction breakdown voltage (typical overvoltage of 5V), for which a single photon interacting in the ...

Integrated simulator for single photon avalanche diodes

2011 Numerical Simulation of Optoelectronic Devices, 2011
We present a new mono-dimensional device simulator optimized for the behavioral inspection and design of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPAD). The particular operating conditions in which these pn junctions are used, reverse biased above the breakdown voltage, lead to a non-univocal I-V characteristic and a non-stationary behavior, which is difficult ...

A New Generation of SPAD—Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes

IEEE Sensors Journal, 2007
Design and characterization of a new generation of single photon avalanche diodes (SPAD) array, manufactured by STMicroelectronics in Catania, Italy, are presented. Device performances, investigated in several experimental conditions and here reported, demonstrate their suitability in many applications.

Single-Photon Avalanche Diode for Scalable Particle Detection

IEEE EUROCON 2023 - 20th International Conference on Smart Technologies, 2023
Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs), also referred to as Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes, are primarily utilized in photon detection and counting. In this work, we present a measurement of the time-of-flight of minimum ionizing particles with outstanding timing resolution, achieved by using SPADs as direct particle detectors.

Photon Counting Heterodyne With a Single Photon Avalanche Diode

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2021
To implement high sensitivity, good anti-interference and low data rate simultaneously in optical heterodyne system, a photon counting heterodyne mechanism is proposed in this letter. Due to the stochastic behavior, a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) is used as both a photon collector and a sparse sampler.

Characterization of InGaAs/InP single-photon avalanche diodes

2010 IEEE Photinic Society's 23rd Annual Meeting, 2010
Improvements on InGaAs/InP Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs) make them very promising for many NIR single-photon counting applications. In order to fully exploit such detectors, it is mandatory to operate them in optimized working conditions and in association with proper front-end electronics.

Silicon single photon avalanche diodes: situation and prospect

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
Photon counting was introduced and developed during four decades relying on Photomultiplier Tubes (PMT), but interesting alternatives are nowadays provided by solid-state single-photon microdetectors. In particular, Silicon Single-Photon Avalanche-Diodes (SPAD) attain remarkable basic performance, such as high photon detection efficiency over a broad ...

Design and characterization of single photon avalanche diodes arrays

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2010
Abstract During the last years, in collaboration with ST-Microelectronics, we developed a new avalanche photo sensor, single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) see Ref.[S. Privitera, et al., Sensors 8 (2008) 4636 [1] ;S. Tudisco et al., IEEE Sensors Journal 8 (2008) 1324 [2] ].

Single photon avalanches diodes

Photoniques
Twenty years ago the detection of single photons was little more than a scientific curiosity reserved to a few specialists. Today it is a flourishing field with an ecosystem that extends from university laboratories to large semiconductor manufacturers.
