Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Size‐specific, scanner‐independent organ dose estimates in contiguous axial and helical head CT examinations

open access: yes, 2014
PurposeAAPM Task Group 204 introduced size-specific dose estimates for pediatric and adult patients undergoing body CT examinations. This investigation extends that work to head CT exams by using Monte Carlo simulations to develop size-specific, scanner ...

Using body mass index to estimate individualised patient radiation dose in abdominal computed tomography

open access: yesEuropean Radiology Experimental, 2018
Background The size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) is a dose-related metrics that incorporates patient size into its calculation. It is usually derived from the volume computed tomography dose index (CTDIvol) by applying a conversion factor determined ...

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Dose calculations for [131I] meta-iodobenzylguanidine-induced bystander effects

open access: yes, 2014
Targeted radiotherapy is a potentially useful treatment for some cancers and may be potentiated by bystander effects. However, without estimation of absorbed dose, it is difficult to compare the effects with conventional external radiation treatment ...

Tube Current Modulated Computed Tomography Effective Dose and Size Specific Organ Dose Estimates with ImPACT: Total Scan versus Slice by Slice Parameters for Urogram Protocols [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Purpose: One of the predominant computed tomography (CT) dosimetry estimation programs, ImPACT, was not designed to estimate organ absorbed dose or effective dose for modern tube current modulated-CT (TCM-CT). ImPACT also only estimates organ doses for a

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Size-specific dose estimates in chest, abdomen, and pelvis CT examinations of pediatric patients [PDF]

open access: yesDiagnostic and Interventional Radiology, 2018
Size-specific dose estimates (SSDEs) are the latest focus of interest among medical physicists studying radiation dose to the patient in computed tomography (CT). This study aims to make conversions from CTDIvol to SSDE and investigate the relationship between mean SSDE (SSDE) and central SSDE (SSDEcenter) values for pediatric patients of different age

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Identification of a Shiga toxin A‐derived peptide internalized into Gb3 receptor‐bearing cells via interaction with the Shiga toxin B subunit

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The process of internalization of the Shiga toxin A subunit via formation of a complex with the Shiga toxin B subunit, which specifically binds to the Gb3 receptor. The peptide is designed to act as a carrier of drugs into cancer cells. Here, we explored the potential of peptides derived from the catalytic A subunit of Shiga toxin (STxA) to be drug ...
