Piglet mortality in organic herds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Productive performance of organic pig farms is lower compared to conventional farms, but only very few data exist. Better knowledge of the productivity of organic herds regarding litter size at birth, piglet losses around birth and during lactation, as ...

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.

Enhancing paternal rabbit line’s litter size through backcrossing strategy

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science
After 39 generations of selection, a commercial paternal rabbit line, utilised by farmers through artificial inseminations with sperm from males in a three-way crossbreeding scheme based on average daily weight gain merit (ADG), present a deleterious ...

Fitness consequences of female multiple mating: A direct test of indirect benefits

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2012
Background The observation that females mate multiply when males provide nothing but sperm - which sexual selection theory suggests is unlikely to be limiting - continues to puzzle evolutionary biologists. Here we test the hypothesis that multiple mating

Engineered extracellular vesicles enriched with the miR‐214/199a cluster enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the miR‐214/199a cluster is associated with recurrence in ovarian cancer. Engineered small extracellular vesicles (m214‐sEVs) elevate miR‐214‐3p/miR‐199a‐5p in tumor cells, suppress β‐catenin, TLR4, and YKT6 signaling, reprogram tumor‐derived sEV cargo, reduce chemoresistance and migration, and enhance carboplatin efficacy and survival in ...

Determinants of Low Birth Weight in Malawi: Bayesian Geo-Additive Modelling.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Studies on factors of low birth weight in Malawi have neglected the flexible approach of using smooth functions for some covariates in models. Such flexible approach reveals detailed relationship of covariates with the response.

Evaluation of Some Litter Traits and Heritability Estimates of Nigerian Indigenous Pigs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Cumulative litter records of 1494 progeny from 257 litters produced by 30 sires and 87 sows of Nigerian indigenous pigs (NIP) from the Swine Unit of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching and Research Farm for a period of fourteen years (1977-1990) were ...

Keratin 19 as a prognostic marker and contributing factor of metastasis and chemoresistance in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Keratin 19 (KRT19) is overexpressed in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer with high levels of Kallikrein‐related peptidases (KLK) 4–7 and is associated with poor survival. In vivo analyses demonstrate that elevated KRT19 increases peritoneal tumour burden.
