Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Pharmacological inhibition of myostatin improves skeletal muscle mass and function in a mouse model of stroke

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
In stroke patients, loss of skeletal muscle mass leads to prolonged weakness and less efficient rehabilitation. We previously showed that expression of myostatin, a master negative regulator of skeletal muscle mass, was strongly increased in skeletal ...

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

Changes in Northern Elephant Seal Skeletal Muscle Following Thirty Days of Fasting and Reduced Activity

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2020
Northern elephant seals (NES, Mirounga angustirostris) undergo an annual molt during which they spend ∼40 days fasting on land with reduced activity and lose approximately one-quarter of their body mass.

Comment on “The effect of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs on skeletal muscle mass in rheumatoid arthritis patients: a systematic review with meta-analysis”

open access: yesArthritis Research & Therapy, 2022
We read with great interest the article by Hein et al., which described the meta-analysis study on the impact of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) therapy on skeletal muscle mass in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients.

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Study of calcium sparks in skeletal and smooth muscle cells in normal and pathological conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
mTOR signaling influence a wide range of cellular process including protein synthesis (Iadevaia et al., 2012; Ma and Blenis, 2009; Thoreen et al., 2012), lipids synthesis (Lamming and Sabatini, 2013), transcription (Dibble and Manning, 2013; Vazquez ...

Plasma EV Proteomics Identifies ECM Remodeling and Inflammatory Proteins LUM and C7 as Candidate Biomarkers in FSHD

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is one of the most debilitating and common muscular dystrophies. Despite its severity, no approved therapy exists for FSHD patients. However, several therapeutic candidates are currently under development, and some have recently entered clinical trials, marking the need for reliable ...

CONSTRUCTIVE TISSUE REMODELING BY EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX BIOSCAFFOLDS WITHIN THE AGING SKELETAL MUSCLE MICROENVIRONMENT [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Adult mammalian skeletal muscle tissue retains inherent regenerative capability in response to injury. This regenerative response is contingent upon an activated progenitor cell population and a temporal transition from pro-inflammatory M1 to ...

EXERCISE EFFECTS ON MUSCLE STEM CELLS

open access: yesAnnales Kinesiologiae, 2018
Satellite cells are skeletal muscle stem cells that facilitate muscle repair and regeneration after “damage” which occurs after physiological stimuli: exercise, post-training micro-injuries and electrical stimulation.
