Lubrication failure of polyalphaolefin (PAO) oil film at high slide/roll ratios of more than 1.9 has been experimentally investigated based on a ball-on-disc configuration. The central film thickness and the oil pool shape in the contact were determined by optical interferometry and fluorescence microscopy, respectively, and the traction coefficient ...

Solving coupled boundary slip and heat transfer EHL problem under large slide–roll ratio conditions
Tribology International, 2019Abstract Furnishing boundary slip at one of the liquid/solid interfaces in a bearing contact has been proven able to reduce bearing friction in a few recent studies conducted under mild running conditions where thermal effect is insignificant. However, if the concept is applied to practical conditions, how the slip affects temperature rise and its ...

The influence of base oil polarity and slide–roll ratio on additive-derived reaction layer formation
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2011Functional additives, particularly extreme-pressure and antiwear additives, in formulated oil will compete to adsorb and form a protective layer in tribological contacts. The thickness of the layer is determined by the equilibrium between the formation and removal processes. In this article, the interactions between additives and base oil molecules and

Film Thicknesses in Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication at High Slide/Roll Ratios
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Conference Proceedings, 1968The thicknesses of the films of lubricant formed between two steel discs in rolling and sliding contact have been estimated from measurements of the electrical capacity between the two discs. As the slide/roll ratio increased above a certain level the experimental values of the film thickness became progressively greater than the values predicted by ...

With tribology research aimed at decreasing energy consumption, two factors are inherently in focus: lubricant film thickness and traction. These factors are effectively decoupled and depend on lubricant properties which are sometimes contradictory-favourable for one factor and disadvantageous for the other.

A Simple Calculation of EHL Traction at Small Slide/Roll Ratio Including Roller Elasticity
World Tribology Congress III, Volume 2, 2005Elastohydrodynamic point contact traction may be predicted accurately for the small slide-to-roll ratio, Σ, isothermal case by first calculating the shear response of the liquid in a parallel gap with a hemispherical pressure distribution and then correcting Σ for the elastic roller compliance.

Complete numerical solutions are obtained for the steady-state line contact thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) problems. The contact surfaces are arranged to run in opposite directions. The slide-roll ratios are allowed to be as high as infinity.
