Mechanics of sliding in rate/state friction experiments

One difficulty that arises in the application of rate-state experimental results to natural events is the problem of scale: the size of samples is measured in centimeters whereas faults are many kilometers in length and depth, and the disparity in the scales of time is as great. The research reported here is designed to bridge this gap.
