The effect of sliding speed on the rate of wear of sapphire on steel
Wear, 1966Abstract Frictional force in the sapphire-steel slide interface is reduced with increased sliding speeds. The high temperatures generated at the higher sliding speeds appear to promote chemical reactions, the products of which serve to decrease the shear forces in the interface.

Grain boundary sliding, and the effects of particles on its rate
Metallurgical Transactions, 1972Grain boundary sliding can be conveniently studied by loading helical springs wound of wire with a “bamboo” structure. Such tests on pure silver coils show that identically-stressed boundaries slide at widely different rates, and that the sliding rate in any one boundary is very anisotropic. Temperature and Strain Rate Effects in Grain Boundary Sliding
MRS Proceedings, 1995AbstractWe have performed total energy density functional theory calculations to investigate the sliding process at the ∑ = 5 (001) twist grain boundary in germanium. The accurate quantum mechanical description of the interatomic bonding provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of bond breaking and remaking that occur during the sliding. In this ...

Diagnostic Rate of the Cancer by BDORT Utilizing the Cancer Slide
Acupuncture & Electro-Therapeutics Research, 1999Purpose: To make a diagnosis of cancer with BDORT (resonance test), we can choose two methods. One is to use a chemical agent like Integrin α5β1 or Oncogene C-fos Ab2, the other is to use microscopic cancer slides. These two methods were originally introduced by Prof. Omura of New York.

The ratings slide. Are we headed for a capital crisis?
Hospitals & health networks, 1999On hospital credit ratings, the news is tough and tougher--what many industry watchers call a capital crisis in the making. Rating agencies contend the situation has been building for years, even while hospital margins reached historic highs as recently as 1997. "Then everything fell apart at the seams," says one bond rating pro.

Effect of Heating Rate in Low Speed Sliding Experiments
Nature Physical Science, 1971BLOK'S critical temperature hypothesis1 is widely used in estimating the temperature at which gear teeth will scuff when lubricated by plain mineral oils. Low speed sliding experiments have been used by several workers to test the hypothesis because of the insignificant frictional heating afforded by this technique and hence the fact that bulk ...
