Intracellular Signaling of the TGF‐β Superfamily by Smad Proteins

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1999
Abstract: TGF‐β is a potent inhibitor of cell growth, and accumulating evidence suggests that perturbation of the TGF‐β signaling pathway leads to tumorigenesis. Smads are recently identified proteins that mediate intracellular signaling of the TGF‐β superfamily. Smads 2 and 3 are phosphorylated by the TGF‐β type I receptor.

Smad Proteins in Apoptotic and Survival Signaling

2007
Perhaps the most critical decision to be made during the life of a cell is whether to live or to die. Signaling events initiated by TGF-β superfamily cytokines play a critical role in specifying cell death and survival responses. Of particular importance in this signaling process are the Smad proteins.
