Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Local elastic response measured near the colloidal glass transition

open access: yes, 2012
We examine the response of a dense colloidal suspension to a local force applied by a small magnetic bead. For small forces, we find a linear relationship between the force and the displacement, suggesting the medium is elastic, even though our colloidal

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Soil stiffness from back-analysis of pile load tests in Al Burrullus

open access: yesAin Shams Engineering Journal, 2022
Estimation of soil stiffness plays an essential role in settlement computations associated with the design of foundations. Full-scale pile load testing is the best means for defining the load displacement response.

Comparison of two methods for describing the strain profiles in quantum dots

open access: yes, 1997
The electronic structure of interfaces between lattice-mismatched semiconductor is sensitive to the strain. We compare two approaches for calculating such inhomogeneous strain -- continuum elasticity (CE, treated as a finite difference problem) and ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Material plastic properties characterization using a generic algorithm and finite element method modelling of the plane-strain small punch test [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In this paper, a novel plane strain small punch test (SPT) method is proposed for material plastic properties characterization. The plane strain SPT is different from the standard SPT in the two ways: (a) a long thin rectangular specimen (with dimensions

Control of spin coherence in $n$-type GaAs quantum wells using strain [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We show that the bulk-inversion-asymmetry-type strain-induced spin-orbit coupling can be used to effectively modify the Dresselhaus spin splitting in (001) GaAs quantum wells with small well width and the resulting spin lifetime can be increased by two ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
