Orchids is an intrusion detection tool based on techniques for fast, on-line model-checking. Orchids detects complex, correlated strands of events with very low overhead in practice, although its detection algorithm has worst-case exponential time complexity. The purpose of this paper is twofold.

A patient with chronic alcoholism presents to the emergency department inebriated and covered in emesis. He denies consuming his usual liquor of choice. He has a distinct fruity odor of acetone on his breath; however, he denies drinking nail polish remover. He has an osmolar gap of 17 mOsm/L and is positive for ketones in his urine.

Odorant signal transduction and neurogenesis are fundamental properties of the olfactory epithelium. Many preparations have been used to elucidate some of the mechanisms underlying these properties. In this article, we briefly review these research areas and describe some of the techniques used to obtain the data.

The smell of a molecule is subjective, because there is a variablity in its representative language. The reporting is done according to the vocabulary repertoire of human subjects and researchers concerned. The olfactory databases thus consist of molecules and their smell characteristics defined by words.

I edited this sitting in an airport inhaling the scent of my wine to hide the odour of the person next to me. Returning home, I found the Alaskan spring air fresh with the mineral scent of melting snow and the first hints of new growth. Odours punctuate life, whether we choose them to or not.
