Abstract Demonstration of the use of Tiger Snake Anti‐venom in Stephen's Banded Snake envenomation is described. The patient presented with a clear history of a bite and a mild headache. Subsequently, the patient developed defibrination coagulopathy.

Snake Antivenoms: Heterologous and Polyclonal Antisera

Animal sera are the only source for antivenom production today. The main disadvantage of heterologous protein products is frequent adverse reactions due to contaminant protein, other than antibody. They are also in very short supply worldwide as traditional manufacturers have discontinued production due to economic constraints.

Merit and Demerit of Polyvalent Snake Antivenoms

Polyvalent antivenoms contain specific antibodies capable of neutralizing a number of homologous venoms from different species/genera. They can save lives of victims of snake envenomations, even when the culprit snake has not been identified (the usual case, about 80% of the time), and a monovalent antivenom ca not be chosen.

An amateur herpetologist developed chills, diaphoresis and generalized urticaria 5 h after receiving Antivenin (Crotalidae) Polyvalent (Wyeth) for treatment of rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) envenomation. The patient had been bitten 8 mo earlier by a copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix mokeson) resulting in minimal envenomation.

Snake venoms contains complex enzymes and toxic proteins. Snake bites have a wide clinical spectrum from dry bites to death. The main treatment is antivenom application. 13-year-old female patient was brought to emergency service with a snake bite complaint. General medical condition was not good.

[Role of antivenoms in the treatment of snake envenomation].

The production of antivenoms, which were long deemed ineffective, dangerous and difficult to use, has improved dramatically. These antibodies (immunoglobulin G) are now fragmented, purified and controlled for their quality, leading to significantly better safety and facilitating their emergency use.
