Extracellular self-DNA induces local inhibition of growth, regulates production of reactive oxygen species, and gene expression in rice roots

open access: yesBiologia Plantarum, 2023
The capacity of extracellular self-DNA (esDNA) to inhibit growth is getting more research attention as this could be explored for several purposes, including the development of specific bioherbicides.

Single copy/knock-in models of ALS SOD1 in C. elegans suggest loss and gain of function have different contributions to cholinergic and glutamatergic neurodegeneration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Mutations in Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) lead to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease that disproportionately affects glutamatergic and cholinergic motor neurons.

Heat-shock pretreatment inhibits sorbitol-induced apoptosis in K562, U937 and HeLa cells. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The aim of this study was to determine whether heat-shock pretreatment exerted a protective effect against sorbitol-induced apoptotic cell death in K562, U937 and HeLa cell lines and whether such protection was associated with a decreased cytochrome c

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.
