The evaluation of the genotoxicity of two food preservatives: Sodium benzoate and potassium benzoate
Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2011In this study, the genotoxic effects of sodium benzoate (SB) and potassium benzoate (PB) were investigated in cultured human peripheral lymphocytes using chromosomal aberrations (CA), sister chromatid exchange (SCE), and micronuclei (MN). The level of nuclear DNA damage of SB and PB were also evaluated using the comet assay.

Disposition of sodium benzoate in newborninfants with hyperammonemia
The Journal of Pediatrics, 1983Sodium benzoate lowers serum ammonia concentrations by the activation of a non-urea cycle pathway of ammonia removal. The disposition of sodium benzoate was monitored in four hyperammonemic newborn infants, using a simple and newly developed assay for benzoate and hippurate, to assess (1) the metabolic capability of patients of this age to utilize this

SODIUM BENZOATE-MEDIATED CYTOTOXICITY IN MAMMALIAN CELLS
Journal of Food Biochemistry, 2011ABSTRACT Sodium benzoate (SB) is widely used in food chemistry, cosmetics and the pharmaceutical industry. Previous studies suggest possible toxic effects of SB when used as a food preservative. However, these studies were confined to microbiological systems.

To the Editor:— With the increasing use of the synthesis of hippuric acid as a test of liver function, the toxicity of sodium benzoate requires careful revaluation. Recently Kinsey and Wright ( J. Lab. & Clin. Med. 29 :188 [Feb.] 1944) reported that, after a patient recovering from a serious attack of hepatitis had taken the usual dose of 6 Gm.

DETOXICATION OF SODIUM BENZOATE IN NEUROPSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS
American Journal of Psychiatry, 1940The rate of detoxication of benzoic acid was determined in patients with various neuropsychiatric diseases. About one half of the patients with catatonia showed a defect in hippuric acid synthesis. This may be due to the state of muscular rigidity and immobility of these patients.

Interaction of sodium benzoate with trypsin by spectroscopic techniques
Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy, 2011The toxicity of sodium benzoate to trypsin was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy, synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy under mimic physiological conditions. Sodium benzoate could unfold trypsin by decreasing the β-sheet structure, which leads to more exposure of ...

Lack of Tumorigenicity of Sodium Benzoate in Mice
Toxicological Sciences, 1984Sodium benzoate was administered as a 2% solution in drinking water for life to randomly bred Swiss mice. Consumption of the chemical caused no detectable tumorigenic effect under the current experimental conditions.

On the mechanism of inhibition of gluconeogenesis and ureagenesis by sodium benzoate
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1991Synthesis of glucose from lactate and generation of urea from ammonia were inhibited when sodium benzoate was added to suspensions of rat hepatocytes. Assays with isolated mitochondria suggested pyruvate carboxylase and the N-acetyl-L-glutamate (NAG)-dependent carbamoylphosphate synthetase (CPS-I) as potential sites of inhibition for both pathways ...
