Adenosine A3 receptor antagonists as anti‐tumor treatment in human prostate cancer: an in vitro study

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The A3 adenosine receptors (A3ARs) are overexpressed in prostate cancer. AR 292 and AR 357, as A3AR antagonists, are capable of blocking proliferation, modulating the expression of drug transporter genes involved in chemoresistance, ferroptosis, and the hypoxia response, and inducing cell death.

Vesicular Glutamate Transporters (SLCA17 A6, 7, 8) Control Synaptic Phosphate Levels

open access: yesCell Reports, 2021
Summary: Vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUTs) fill synaptic vesicles with glutamate. VGLUTs were originally identified as sodium-dependent transporters of inorganic phosphate (Pi), but the physiological relevance of this activity remains unclear ...

Energy metabolism and glutamate-glutamine cycle in the brain: a stoichiometric modeling perspective [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Systems Biology 7:103 (2013), 2013
The energetics of cerebral activity critically relies on the functional and metabolic interactions between neurons and astrocytes. Important open questions include the relation between neuronal versus astrocytic energy demand, glucose uptake and intercellular lactate transfer, as well as their dependence on the level of activity.

Soman induces endoplasmic reticulum stress and apoptosis of cerebral organoids via the GRP78‐ATF6‐CHOP signaling pathway

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cerebral organoids were employed as a novel model to explore the neurotoxicity of soman. Soman inhibited acetylcholinesterase activity, increased cell apoptosis and upregulated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers glucose‐regulated protein 78 (GRP78), activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) and C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP).

Re‐evaluation of glutamic acid (E 620), sodium glutamate (E 621), potassium glutamate (E 622), calcium glutamate (E 623), ammonium glutamate (E 624) and magnesium glutamate (E 625) as food additives

open access: yesEFSA Journal, 2017
The EFSA Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources added to Food (ANS) provides a scientific opinion re‐evaluating the safety of glutamic acid–glutamates (E 620–625) when used as food additives.

Reduced Sulfation Enhanced Oxytosis and Ferroptosis in Mouse Hippocampal HT22 Cells

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2020
Sulfation is a common modification of extracellular glycans, tyrosine residues on proteins, and steroid hormones, and is important in a wide variety of signaling pathways.

Cortical Excitability Before and After Long‐Term Perampanel Treatment for Epilepsy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Antiseizure medications (ASMs), which may influence cortical excitability, are the mainstay of epilepsy treatment. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) helps evaluate cortical excitability. We assessed changes in TMS responses using serial TMS measurements in people treated with an adjunctive noncompetitive AMPA‐receptor ...

Glutamate Transporters in Hippocampal LTD/LTP: Not Just Prevention of Excitotoxicity

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2019
Glutamate uptake is a process mediated by sodium-dependent glutamate transporters, preventing glutamate spillover from the synapse. Typically, astrocytes express higher amounts of glutamate transporters, thus being responsible for most of the glutamate ...
