Near‐Infrared Organic Photovoltaic Electrodes for Subretinal Neurostimulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Organic photovoltaic electrodes based on the D18:Y6 blend enable precise and light‐controlled activation of retinal ganglion cells in a degenerating retina. NIR Light‐driven activation of retinal ganglion cells, tunable stimulation parameters, and biocompatibility with human retinal organoids highlight their potential for next‐generation prosthetics ...

Refinement of the Central Steps of Substrate Transport by the Aspartate Transporter GltPh: Elucidating the Role of the Na2 Sodium Binding Site.

open access: yesPLoS Computational Biology, 2015
Glutamate homeostasis in the brain is maintained by glutamate transporter mediated accumulation. Impaired transport is associated with several neurological disorders, including stroke and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Bioinspired Polypeptide Dendrimer‐Modified Thin‐Film Composite Membranes for Selective Lithium‐Magnesium Separation with DFT Insights

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We fabricated a biomimetic dendrimer‐modified thin‐film nanocomposite membrane with a coordination‐assisted ion‐selective interface. pH‐responsive polypeptide sites preferentially bind Mg2+ and promote Li+ permeation, as predicted by density functional theory calculations of metal‐ligand interactions.

Elaboration of garlic and salt spice with reduced sodium intake

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2014
Garlic and salt spice is widely used in Brazilian cookery, but it has a high sodium content; as high sodium intake has been strongly correlated to the incidence of chronic diseases.

Circadian Regulation of Glutamate Transporters

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2018
L-glutamate is the major excitatory amino acid in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). This neurotransmitter is essential for higher brain functions such as learning, cognition and memory.

Glutamate impairs neuronal calcium extrusion while reducing sodium gradient

open access: yesNeuron, 1994
The rate of decrease of neuronal [Ca2+]i after an elevation induced by a glutamate pulse is much slower than that after a comparable [Ca2+]i elevation induced by a K+ depolarization. To investigate whether the [Na+]i increase taking place during the glutamate pulse reduces the rate of Ca2+ extrusion, we monitored simultaneously [Na+]i and [Ca2+]i ...

Platelet Lysate–Enriched Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell–Derived Chondrocyte Sheets for Bone Defect Repair via Endochondral Ossification

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Human iPSC‐derived hypertrophic chondrocyte sheet promotes bone regeneration. Abstract Bone defects are a major clinical challenge, primarily owing to the limited self‐healing capacity of bones and the high risk of complications associated with conventional treatment strategies.

Strategies to Improve the Lipophilicity of Hydrophilic Macromolecular Drugs

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Hydrophilic macromolecular drugs can be successfully lipidized by covalent attachment of lipids, by hydrophobic ion pairing with negatively or positively charged surfactants, and by dry or wet reverse micelle formation. Lipophilicity enhancement of hydrophilic macromolecules has several benefits including stability and bioavailability improvement ...
