Plant responses to belowground variations along elevational gradients in temperate and tropical climates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Soil is a hyper-heterogeneous environment, and how plants respond to changes in belowground variations in soil properties and microclimate is poorly understood.

Self‐Sintering Ionogel Binder for Flexible, Recyclable, and Healable Printed Giant Magnetoresistive Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Electronic waste has emerged as a major environmental challenge, driven by the massive consumption and a limited lifetime of modern electronic devices, stimulating the development of sustainable electronics. Here, an all‐biomaterial gelatin‐choline‐citric acid ([Ch][CA]) ionogel is developed as an active binder to realize self‐sintered ...

Microbes: Affect physical properties of soil

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 1965
These studies indicate that some of the microbial polysaccharides are relatively resistant to decomposition by soil organisms and, therefore, may well be contributing influences to the favorable effects of organic residues on soil physical properties.

Establishing a Model Precursor System: Over a Decade of Research on Carbon Dots from the Citric Acid‐Urea System

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The citric acid/urea (CA‐Urea) precursor system offers a versatile, scalable route to carbon dots with tunable luminescence and multifunctionality. Mechanistic insights into precursor chemistry and reaction parameters have enabled doping, surface modification, and hybridization strategies, yielding CDs for luminescent devices, sensing, catalysis ...

The effect of soil conservation technologies on hydro-physical soil properties

open access: yesLittera Scripta, 2011
The presented article analyses the efficiency of the application of auxiliary soil material PRP SOL on agricultural farmland with classical cultivation and evaluates its influence on the soil water regime and ecological stability of the landscape.

Long-term Effects of Tillage on the Retention and Transport of Soil Water [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
Quantitative measurements were made of the physical and chemical properties of two virgin prairie soils, Crowley and Jay, that remain in their native Arkansas environments and of similar soils that had been tilled extensively.

Silicified Wood‐Inspired, High‐Strength Fire‐Resistant Chitin‐Based Aerogels for Sustainable High‐Temperature Thermal Insulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by natural silicified wood, a biomimetic mineralized chitin‐derived aerogel is constructed. It can withstand 81 000 times its own weight, and its backside temperature is 130.4°C after exposure to ∼1300°C butane flame for 600 s, exhibiting high‐strength, fire‐resistance, and super thermal‐insulation properties.

Physical properties of soil mixes used by nurseries

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 1964
Soil mixes have been proposed and are being used by nurseries for various reasons. Evaluations of their properties relating to disease control and fertilization have been well documented.

Short-Term Dynamics of Soil Physical Properties as Affected by Compaction and Tillage in a Silt Loam Soil

open access: yesVadose Zone Journal, 2018
This study investigated short-term dynamics of soil physical properties as affected by tillage and compaction in a silt loam soil. After establishment of an autumn-sown forage oat ( L.) crop with either NT or intensive tillage (IT), five degrees of ...

Melt Electrowriting High Resolution Poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) Scaffolds for Soft Tissue Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This work pioneers melt electrowriting (MEW) of polyethylene vinyl acetate (PEVA) to fabricate ultra‐compliant, high‐resolution scaffolds. By integrating microscale precision with soft tissue‐like biomechanics, PEVA overcomes stiffness‐driven limitations of conventional MEW polymers, establishing a mechanically biomimetic platform for soft tissue ...
