Observationally quantified reconnection providing a viable mechanism for active region coronal heating

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
The solar corona heating mechanism is still subject to debate. Here, the authors report that impulsive reconnection can give rise to an active region corona that is compatible with extreme-ultraviolet observations.

Why Do Solar Wind Models Get It Wrong? Understanding the Capabilities of Time-dependent Solar Wind Simulations

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We explore the capabilities of time-dependent (TD) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) solar wind simulations with the coupled Wang–Sheeley–Arge (WSA) model of the solar corona and the Grid Agnostic MHD for Extended Research Applications model of the inner ...

Heating of the Solar Corona

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1968
The suggestion is advanced that heating of the solar corona results from Landau damping of ion-acoustic waves generated in the motion of photospheric granules. Laboratory experiments relevant to the question of corona heating are discussed, together with the available observational information on the extent of energy deposition in the corona.

New Insights into Type-I Solar Noise Storms from High Angular Resolution Spectroscopic Imaging with the Upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Type-I solar noise storms are perhaps the most commonly observed active radio emissions from the Sun at meter-wavelengths. Noise storms have a long-lived and wideband continuum background with superposed islands of much brighter narrowband and short ...

Magnetic Connectivity in the Time-dependent Corona and Heliosphere

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Magnetic flux fills the heliosphere, expands outward from the solar corona, and is fundamentally related to the structure and dynamics of the solar corona and solar wind.

Solar Corona and Wind

open access: yesJournal of geomagnetism and geoelectricity, 1991
This paper provides a brief review of basic solar wind theory and makes use of the Laval nozzle analogy to elucidate the characteristic features of a solar wind driven by thermal and Alfven wave pressure. It is argued that there is a considerable body of evidence in favour of wave acceleration of high speed solar wind.
